Toña Is Speaks Out: Injustice and Disappointment in Spanish Women’s Football

After her successes in the lower categories of the Spanish team, the name of Toña Is began to be linked to the senior team until, in January 2020, she was removed from the RFEF. With Toña there was no justice or sports meritocracy and she denounced it internally, but no one paid attention to her. Rubiales and Vilda wanted her out and today, after the worldwide scandal over the RFEF president’s kiss to Jenni Hermoso, Toña speaks out without fear to denounce something she has already experienced and show her disappointment with those who have applauded Rubiales’ speech. From Vilda to De la Fuente, passing through Montse Tomé and Sonia Bermúdez.

Rubiales does not resign: “I have to apologize, but it was a mutual and consented kiss”

Ask. Before talking about the controversy, I want to ask you about sports. A person who has worked so hard for women’s football will be tremendously happy.

Answer. Of course. How can it be otherwise. I have been involved in football for many years, both as a player and as a coach. I have trained all those girls that are there and it fills me with pride and gives me great satisfaction to see how girls that I have trained can win a world cup at an absolute level. It’s something that women’s football has needed for a long time and I couldn’t be happier. It’s a pity that all this scandal with the president, with the coach and other assistants who are applauding someone who has done something grotesque has been clouded.

It is unfortunate that people linked to the Federation, such as coaches or coach assistants, are ashamed of having applauded Ruiales in his speech with what we have been through

Toña Is, coach

P. As a football person and as a woman, what do you have to say about what Rubiales did after the final?

R. It seems somewhat unacceptable to me. Unfortunately, time has shown us that, in January 2020, when I was removed from the Federation after having won everything, what I denounced at that time internally in the RFEF turned out to be true. And, above all, zero tolerance for these macho attitudes in sport and in society. This has to serve so that we never experience something similar again. We are seeing how the social networks are turning, women, men… All the people who are passionate about women’s football turned to Jenni because she, in the end, instead of a victim, she is going to be the culprit. All my support to Jenni. Always. It also seems a bit unfortunate to me that people linked to the Federation, such as coaches or assistant coaches, are ashamed of having applauded Ruiales in his intervention with what we have been through.

All my support to Jenni and to all the women who have been through what unfortunately I have been through when I have been in the Federation by Vilda and her helpers

Toña Is, coach

P. That is one of the most amazing images. See Vilda, Luis de la Fuente or Sonia Bermúdez applaud.

R. Yes, Sonia Bermúdez and Montse Tomé applauding Rubiales. And on top of that they continue to be given charges and salary increases. Well, we already know who is there and why they are… We must not detract from the first absolute World Cup that has been won as a national team, but the credit has gone to the players, that is clear. But this does not mean that all the people who have been denouncing certain things about the Federation are right. The players who did not want to go and so on. I think there is an incredible group there, there is an incredible group to continue giving a lot of talk in women’s football after the World Cup.

Jenni, fortunately, has a union behind her like FUTPRO that is defending her tooth and nail. In that sense, she will be very supported by all the people who love this sport, of which there are many. Players, coaches, coaches and also players. Jenni is also getting much-needed support from professional gamers. All my support to Jenni and all the women who have gone through what, unfortunately, I have also gone through when I have been in the Federation by Vilda and her helpers, why not say it? They have made my life impossible and, in the end, I am at home because they have come together to keep me away.

Comparison of the Rubiales version with the images: “She lifted me off the ground, we almost fell”

P. It’s just that you were fired from your position having reaped many successes and we still don’t know why.

R. That’s how it is. In the end, time puts everyone in their place. I have always said that time had to be given time. I have kept quiet. Today, the fact of giving my support to Jenni and to all the players who have gone through something similar to what I have experienced, has had a lot of repercussions. Many people supporting me and wishing me to be back in football soon because everything they have seen that has happened has been unfair, so I am very grateful to all those people who are giving me their support. Today has been incredible. I have had a lot of messages and calls because they could have imagined what I had been able to go through there with all those people.

In the end, time puts everyone in their place

Toña Is, coach

P. Because Toña Is has been silent until now and everything that has happened has invited her to tell what happened to you.

R. Yes, that’s why I tell you that today was the straw that broke the camel’s back. There comes a time when I can’t take it anymore, I can’t keep quiet, I have to do something. And well, simply, a tweet of support for Jenni has served to make people realize that I have also suffered a lot when I have been there and that things have to change.

P. Can this only end Rubiales out?

R. It’s not me who has to say it. Of course, I had to be there days ago for my way of seeing. What has happened is very serious, whatever I say and despite the twists and turns I want to give it, but I am not the one who has to decide. That is what the CSD is for, that is what the Government is for, that is why there is a Sports Law that punishes it and for that there is a judicial route in which I believe that all the institutions have to enter to solve this problem and punish it to the extent that they deem appropriate.

Today was the straw that broke the camel’s back. There comes a time when I can’t anymore, I can’t keep quiet

Toña Is, coach

P. When can we see her train again?

R. Hopefully soon. I don’t set a date, hopefully it’s tomorrow, but for now I’m there, waiting for a good opportunity to come my way and study it. When I have a project that I like, Toña will return to football so that she can enjoy what he likes the most.

Toña Is, during a rally with the national team.

P. It’s complicated because of how everything is, but… would you be excited to meet again with this generation in the senior team?

R. Ufff… Hopefully, but a lot has to change. I would like nothing more, but a lot has to change. I don’t see anything changing right now. I would love to continue this process with those players with whom I have won the U17 World Cup and with all those players who, although they have not been in that World Cup because they were a little older, have gone through me. Being able to continue contributing with them to making women’s football bigger, putting it where it should be and continuing to win titles. Hopefully it can be done soon, but right now I see it as impossible due to the situation.
