There are 33 deaths from influenza in Panama; none of the victims had been vaccinated

The Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), reports that until next week No. 30 6 thousand samples have been analyzed, detecting more than 950 positive cases by influenza.

The report highlights that, for the second consecutive week, no deaths have been registeredtherefore, to date, a cumulative amount of 33 deaths from influenza (26 of type A and 7 of type B), 16 men and 17 womenin the age range, between 1 month to 88 years.

None of the deceased had received the influenza vaccine.

These deaths correspond to the regions of Health, metropolitan with eight (8) deaths; West Panama with seven (7); San Miguelito with four (4); North Panama with three (3), Chiriquí with three (3) deaths, Darien with two (2) deaths, Veraguas with two (2) deaths and with one death, there are the Health regions of Colon, Bocas del Toro, Cocle and one with residence in San Miguelito, but was confined in Panama East (Chepo).

93% (31/33) had risk factors such as: hypertension, diabetes, obesity, pulmonary, renal, neurological, immunosuppressionamong other.

Of these deaths, 24% (8/33) had a history of having a positive Covid-19 test.

According to information supplied by the Expanded Program on Immunizationa total of 1,353,989 doses of the influenza vaccine have been applied from April 12 to August 7, 992,593 have been placed by MINSA and 361,396 doses by the CSS.

The regions with the most doses applied are: the Metropolitan Region with 235,919 doses (164,309 are from Minsa and 71,610 from the CSS); West Panama with 190,863 doses applied (106,065 from Minsa and 84,798 from CSS) and Chiriquí with 172,898 doses (139,773 are from Minsa and 33,125 from CSS).

They reiterate the importance of getting vaccinated

The Ministry of Health reiterates to the population, especially to the most vulnerable groups, parents, to come and vaccinate their children, from six months of age, those over 60 years of age, pregnant women, as well as bedridden patients. Likewise, it is reiterated that every person who cares for an elderly person must be vaccinated against influenza.

You are reminded that people who submit flu-like symptoms (runny nose, fever, headache and general malaise) do not self-medicate and go to the nearest health facility to be treated and have the corresponding tests done.

The Minsa emphasizes that the population must maintain biosecurity measures implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic, such as constant hand washing, the use of a mask in crowded places, people over 60 years of age and in chronic patients to avoid contagion and get vaccinated against influenza, to reduce and counteract cases of influenza in the country.
