The XXIII Edition of the Medieval Festival in Fossanova: A Journey Back in Time

One of the most eagerly awaited events of the Pontine summer is back for its XXIII edition: the Medieval Festival in the village of Fossanova, a real blast from the past among the evocative atmospheres of one of the most beautiful villages in the province and in Italy, among the long-awaited historical re-enactments.

This year’s novelty is that the festival, after decades, is once again being organized by the Municipality of Priverno: continuity with past editions will be sought but with a greater participation of local associations and greater prominence of local excellence. The historical reconstruction of the medieval period will be treated even more in depth, making particular reference to the figure of Saint Thomas Aquinas, an important figure for Priverno who in the next three years will celebrate with a series of initiatives the centenaries of the canonization (1323), of the death ( which took place in Fossanova in 1274) and of the birth (1225).

From 11 to 13 August, the Borgo di Fossanova takes a leap back in time and plunges into the middle of the Middle Ages, this year with an innovative format and a rich and important program of events.

Starting at 19.00, every evening, it will be possible to attend shows and suggestions in the village, including carousels and parades, flag-wavers from the districts of the cities of Cori, Carpineto and Anagni, musical and theatrical performances with “i Mascheroni”, ” the Cimbali”, “the court of the Buffonis”, “the Contada d’Aquino heraldic association”, Francesco Ciccone of “i Musici Viatores”, fakirism and fire shows, performances by waders and jugglers.

And again, hosted in the Parco degli Ulivi del Borgo, the medieval field of games and weapons will open its tents, with craft workshops, the garden of the friars, medieval heraldry, the wandering merchant, the archery field and shooting with the archery, historical fencing lessons, medieval games of skill, children’s games, assault machines and field tents.

Shapes, sounds and flavors will enhance the cloister of the Fossanova Abbey, thanks to the cosmatesque art of Franco Vitelli, exhibited in the chapter house, to the medicinal and liqueur herbs workshops by Sarandrea set up inside the Refectory and to the Sonus Animae concert of Ensemble, Spiritus Loci, in the Cloister garden.

Specially conceived for the event, the theater-dance show, Witches, curated by Piedi Scalzi by Filippo Venditti, will transform the Auditorium of the Infermeria dei Conversi into a place of truth which, through art, will overcome superstitions and false myths , will restore dignity and memory to the many women persecuted and annihilated in the dark ages of the Middle Ages.

Extraordinarily and for the first time, three important journeys, poetic music, will take shape within the imposing Cistercian setting of the Fossanova Abbey, at 20.45, which will see protagonists:
– Friday, August 11, Ambrogio Sparagna and Davide Rondoni with the OPI soloists in the Canto delle Creature, concert of woods, pastures and hearts;
– Saturday, August 12, Ambrogio Sparagna again, this time accompanied by the Piccolo Oratorio Sacro Popolare per Soli and his instrumental group, in the Salve Regina, the music of the pilgrimage and
– Sunday 13 August, Nando Citarella, Stefano Saletti Saletti, Pejman Tadayon of Cafè Loti, in Taberna with the popular Carmina Burana.

Naturally, during the Festival, it will be possible to taste traditional dishes, local products and delicious street food in the bistros of the Borgo and the stands set up for the occasion.
