Budapest is not just the big stars. The stands also applaud the anonymous heroes. In this case, heroin. The Latvian Agate Caune will contest the final of the women’s 5,000m after qualifying in the first semifinal in surprising fashion.

Far from the best marks of his series, Caune opted to escape in the first of the twelve and a half laps on the track of the National Athletics Center. The group, which included, among others, the Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay or the Kenyan Beatrice Chebet, let her do it while they jogged slowly behind.

Caune was distancing himself on the track and also on the clock. Passing through the first thousand, he leads the peloton by 10 seconds. By two thousand there were already 13. And in 3,000 the advantage went over 20 seconds.

With the public delivered to his gallop, Caune began to suffer the consequences of his pace, and the last thousand meters of the race had the uncertainty of knowing if he would last until the end. His difference was dwindling twice as fast as it had taken him to conquer it, but at the last 400 he still entered with seven seconds ahead of a group already led by Tsegay and, therefore, placed in single file.

Tsegay was the first to overtake Caune with 200 meters to go, and after the Ethiopian, the Kenyans Beatrice Chebet, who would end up winning the semifinal, and Margaret Kipkemboi also followed. Caune entered fourth at the finish line in 15:00.48, her all-time personal best of hers, and qualified for a final in which she was not counted on.
