The women’s baseball team debuts with a defeat against Canada

The Mexican women’s baseball team opened its historic first participation in a World Cup, with a 9-1 loss to hosts Canada.

Madison Grace Willan opened the scoreboard for the match held at the Port Arthur Stadium in the town of Thunder Bay, Ontario. She first stole the base and advanced to the goal with hits by Alizée Gélinas and Allison Paige Schroder. The locals extended 2-0 when Sena Catteral scored in the third inning catapulted with a single to center field by Willan herself.

The ninth Mexican responded in the fourth. Samaria Benitez singled to right field and scored with wild pitch in the turn of Edith de Leija. After an interruption of more than an hour and a half due to rain, play resumed in the bottom of the fourth inning. Again Cattetal, Willan, Gélinas and Schroder hit hits and they joined in that same roll Zoe Hicks, Tess Sawkins to score an overwhelming advantage (8-1).

In the sixth, Emily Baxter doubled to center and scored on Hicks’ fly out.

Raine Padgham scored the win. Rosa María del Castillo, the defeat.

US sale in Australia

In the other matches of the opening day, the United States defeated Australia 3-2, and Hong Kong beat South Korea 9-8.

It is the first time that a national team has participated in a Women’s World Cup, an edition that was postponed due to the pandemic, for which Mexico qualified in the Premundial de Las Américas in August 2022.

The tricolor squad reached this penultimate phase of the Cup ranked 12th in the world, and will meet in Group A with Canada (3), the United States (4), Australia (8), South Korea (10) and Hong Kong (11).

In sector B, which will go into action next Monday in Miyo-shi, Japan, the hosts, number one in the world, Chinese Taipei (2), Venezuela (5), Cuba (7), Puerto Rico (9) and France (16).

The best two of each group and two wild cards per group will access the final round that will also be played in Canada, in the summer of 2024.
