The cost of going back to school is increasing again this year due to inflation. The expenses will exceed, all costs included, 3,000 euros according to a calculation by Fage, the first student organization, unveiled on Wednesday. For some courses, certain costs are added to those of housing, food or books. This is the material to buy to follow certain courses, the prices of which have increased significantly.

Four hundred euros spent on sports equipment in STAPS

This is the case for students on the STAPS license (sciences and techniques of physical and sports activities) at the university. For them, the cost of teaching materials has thus increased by 20% this year compared to 2022. Including the expenses related to specific equipment, necessary for the various activities practiced during the year, it reaches an average of 400 euros for this start of the school year. ‘after the national association of STAPS students, Anestaps. It is the second budget item after housing.

“There are sports that cost more than others, such as climbing with slippers, or surfing because the purchase of the combination is taken into account”, enumerates Thomas Chapotat, first vice-president General of Anestaps. “But there are also more basic sports, such as judo or swimming, which still cost more than 30 euros. Knowing that in general we carry out between four and eight physical and sports activities in a year”, the bill can quickly climb, he explains.

“At least 600 euros” for back-to-school material in visual arts

The increase in the price of raw materials, in particular the increase in the cost of paper, also impacts the portfolio of architecture and arts students. “At the beginning of the year, for all the supplies, it’s at least 600 euros”, counts Lucas, in master 2 of research in plastic arts in Amiens, at the Picardie-Jules Verne university.

“Whether for everything that will be yarn, needles, but also wool, cotton… We have featherboard, for example, which is really more expensive this year, as well as inks”, notes the student. “Before, I bought everything at the start of the year, and there, I rather tend to stagger over the months to avoid having too high a cost to bear in September”, he confides. .

However, some supplies are only used for a semester or a year. And equipment rental systems are still too underdeveloped for the taste of student associations.
