The Rise of Canadian Basketball: The Most Talented Squad in History

Charts of the greatest Canadian players of all time are mostly basketball players playing today. There are only three exceptions – former All-Star Jamal Magloire, three-time NBA champion Rick Fox and two-time league MVP Steve Nash. Everyone else is playing in the NBA now: the already mentioned Wiggins, Shay Gilges-Alexander, Jamal Murray, A.R.J. Barrett, Dillon Brooks, etc. Most of them will also be candidates for a spot on the national team this summer. In addition to ten NBA players, the shortlist also includes several experienced men with high-level experience in Europe.

“I’ve been following Canadian basketball for 20 years and I can say without any doubt that the Canadian team assembled this summer is the most talented in history,” Matt Ireland, host of the “Canada Hoops” podcast, confidently asserts in a conversation with MVP, to which Canadian basketball reviewer Scott Witter also agrees: “Assuming, if the build-up goes without a hitch and everyone stays in line, this will surely be the most talented squad in history. I even think Gilges-Alexander and Murray could be the best defensive duo in World Cup history.”
