The Rise of Archery in Genoa: Shooting Arrows at Rubber Animals

GENOA – The arrow shot with great precision pierces the wild boar, and then the bear also has something to do with it: we are in the woods of the Peralto park, on the heights of Genoa: here there are archers who love to shoot arrows at animals, and there are many too, and of all ages, from pensioners to the students. Except that the animals, almost all life-size, are all rigorously made of hard rubber. In short, simple targets, as confirmed Claudio Donato, lawyer of San Fruttuoso and president of Aga, the Genoese Archers Association of the Peralto parkin the shadow of the Castellaccio.

Entering the realm of the archers of the Aga means taking a journey to the other side of the hunter archers who thanks to the recent concession from the Liguria region can now go to the woods not only to shoot with a shotgun but also with a bow and arrow. A decision that has aroused much controversy, even in Parliament, even if those who say no to the liberalization of the new anti-boar Robin Hoods are in the clear majority, even in the world of official hunters.

At Peralto there are three fields for sport archery, one of 60 meters, another of 70 and the third in the woods for the practice of field archery.

Plastic animals used as targets, wild boars, bears, fallow deer and others, are kept in a humid offshoot of the old Castellaccio.

Up there at the Righi with a bow in hand, you also meet a retired couple from Rivarolo, Riccardo Mantero, former Ansaldo coach who taught shooting to his partner of Filipino origins Sol (in the photo above left), but also a true champion, like Rosalba Ricevuto, from San Fruttuoso, gold medal at the European Championships in Tallinn in 2013 who learned to shoot by following her daughter’s lessons and competitions. Everyone loves archery, but only for skewering plastic animals. “I could only shoot at animals if I was forced to by hunger, never for fun” she says Rosalba Receivedin perfect line with the words of all the other Aga archers, including the president Donato who admits: “I’ve always been against hunting, you can also have fun hitting plastic animals”.
