Florence, 24 August 2023 – Pierluigi Marzorati, what is the Legends International Basketball Association, which you represent as general manager, and does it have Carlo Caglieris and Mara Fullin, two legends, like you, president and vice?
“We are a group of former basketball players, in fact. But also sportsmen and women in general, to which have been added referees, managers and entrepreneurs who have decided to dedicate themselves to others. Especially young people, developing training projects for young girls generations, helping them to be aware of their future”.
How did this idea come about?
“A bit for fun, actually. Antonio Corbalan (former Real Madrid star, ed) and I have always been friends, after having been opponents in the national team and in cup matches. So during the pandemic we kept in touch more than usual, also to keep each other company. We said to each other to do something for and with the young people; those things that are said and that often remain suspended”.
Instead Corbalan, like when he played, went on the counterattack…
“Exactly (laughs, ed). The next day he immediately called me back and said ‘Pierlo, I spoke to the Spanish sports minister, he’s OK, we’re off’. And so we all got back into the game”.
With what goals?
“We want to involve not only young people, but also adults, with integration projects, not only through basketball”.
Formidable vehicle of integration.
“I would say sport in general is. We, understood as basketball, are getting busy. In Tuscany, for example, some time ago, together with the contribution of the Region, we redeveloped a playground in Chiesina Uzzanese. There was also the Governor Giani, who as a former basketball player was very much in favor of this type of collaboration”.
In addition to these initiatives, however, your role is also one of training and not just for young people.
“It’s true. We will continue with the projects for the restoration or construction of the pitches, but our mission is also to offer courses for players, managers, coaches and parents so that everyone can play their role. All with the aim of so that young people can pursue their dreams through a path made of emotions, motivations and effort. With the aim of having fun, because fun through effort generates real emotions. Not the false ones generated by other substances which certainly do not temper the character “.
Responsibility mission…
“It’s true, but this is a delicate moment for our young people and adults too must be aware that there is a void of values that needs to be filled. And we are aiming for this”.
But also to keep alive the passion for this discipline.
“Yes, that’s exactly why the Capannina evening was born. Put those who ‘pay the oil’, as they say, at the center of the village. Entrepreneurs, of yesterday and today, who are involved in basketball”.
Without losing sight of solidarity.
“That never, because organizing charitable initiatives is another of our missions “.
