The Dangerous Game: Michael Jordan’s Near Tragedy with Son Jeffrey

A character still adored today by the NBA community, Michael Jordan has nevertheless been guilty of bleak acts in the past. One of them, told by his son Marcus, was almost fatal to the eldest of the siblings, Jeffrey.

In the common mind, such a status has something to dream about. Having a father who is considered an NBA star does indeed come with significant benefits. The comfort of life is undoubtedly the most important and justifies the beautiful image that accompanies this label. However, we must not forget that such a situation also has some disadvantages, even for the descendants… of Michael Jordan.

Rarely injured and accustomed to runs until the Finals, MJ therefore saw his schedule very full. This, not to mention its media and corporate obligations. As such, his children rubbed shoulders with him only sparingly, and therefore could not spend as many moments of complicity with him as they would no doubt have wished. And when they had that chance, things could sometimes go wrong.

Michael Jordan’s big scare with his son Jeffrey

Ultimate competitor, Jordan did not make this character trait disappear when spending time with his children. Years later, they still tell it with absolutely crazy anecdotes about the rage to win of His Airness. One of them, delivered by Marcus in the podcast The Breakfast Clubcould very well have turned out to be tragic, more or less:

“In Jordan’s time, as soon as we took this shot in a match we received a fine…”

I have a pretty crazy story about it. When we were little, we used to play football on our knees with our father at home. One time we were playing in our parents’ bedroom and they had this sort of glass table at the foot of their bed. And just as Jeff was about to score a touchdown — I’ll never forget that moment, my dad tackled Jeff to the glass table!

Ready to do anything to avoid defeat, Mike thus resorted to this ultra-dangerous defensive maneuver for his eldest son. A memory that logically traumatized Marcus given the rest of the scene he describes:

Jeff banged his head against that glass table. I thought he was dead. I mean, you could literally see his flesh and his skull. Jasmine and I were terrified, we were crying. I think he must have received something like 25 stitches!

More material damage than human, therefore, in this story which ended relatively well for Jordan and his family. Nevertheless, not sure that Jeffrey and his brothers and sisters dared to play US football again with their father for fear of reprisals!

Instead of letting his son Jeffrey register a simple innocuous touchdown against him, Michael Jordan preferred to offer him… a short stay in the hospital. Fortunately for the family of the legend of the Bulls, this slippage did not ultimately turn out to be dramatic.
