The Basketball World Cup 2023: A Preview of the Teams and Groups

The Basketball World Cup is just around the corner. The 32 teams that will play the tournament are preparing to travel to the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia, the three venues where supremacy will be at stake. Therefore, we will tell you everything you need to know about the contest that will start next Friday, August 25.

Spain is presented as the current world champion, however, there are several teams that could dethrone it. Among them is the always powerful United States, which despite not bringing all the stars that play in the NBA, has shown its strengths in friendly matches by beating precisely the Iberians, Greece and Slovenia.

Undoubtedly, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s injury is a blow to the aspirations of the Greeks in the tournament. Other teams that want to reaffirm their candidacy for the title include Australia, France, Canada, Slovenia, Serbia and even Germany.

Basketball World Cup groups

The Philippines, the host of the tournament, is located in Group A, along with one of what could be the ‘dark horse’ of the tournament, the Dominican Republic, who have just won the gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games, but who also have Karl-Anthony Towns as a stellar reinforcement. Angola and Italy complete the sector.

Serbia and Puerto Rico aim to stay in Group B, the same as the teams from China and South Sudan, who will seek to give the bell and qualify for the next round. In Pool C, the United States is heavily favored to beat Greece, New Zealand and Jordan.

In Group D, the big favorite is Lithuania, who has Jonas Valanciunas as their main star. Montenegro is the one that is shaping up to be second in the group with the talent of Nikola Vucevic, but Mexico can surprise with an experienced squad. Egypt completes the sector in search of a surprise.

Group E is made up of Australia, Japan, Germany and Finland. Those from Oceania are strong favorites to win that sector thanks to the talents of Patty Mills and Josh Giddey, both in the NBA, while Germany seems destined to be second in the sector, led by Dennis Schroder.

Led by Luka Doncic, Slovenia starts as the clear favorite in Group F, while Georgia, Venezuela and Cape Verde will be the ones to dispute that second place that would grant them a ticket to the second round. Spain leads Group G, where it is accompanied by Brazil, Iran and the Ivory Coast. Group H closes the curtain with France as the great favourite. Canada could put up a fight, while Lebanon and Latvia are unknown.
