Tatjana Maria failed in the first round of the US Open. Ten days after winning the tournament in Barranquilla, Colombia, the 36-year-old from Bad Saulgau lost 6-3, 6-1 to Croatian Petra Martic.
Maria, ten positions lower in the WTA ranking, had no chance against the very powerful playing number 37 in the world rankings. The match only lasted 65 minutes.
At the dress rehearsal for the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, Maria had reached the semi-finals in Cleveland, Ohio. In her previous eight participations in Flushing Meadows, the 2020 Wimbledon semi-finalist had only reached the second round twice, most recently in 2012.
