Coach Lauren Bertolacci’s players were beaten 3-2 (16-25 25-15 23-25 25-17 17-15) by Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday in Monza in Group B.
The Swiss women, who still pocketed a point, nevertheless showed great strength of character. Imperial in a first set where they led 8-1 then 14-4, they found the resources to also win the third round after being five lengths behind (13-18).
Switzerland, 28th European nation while Bosnia and Herzegovina is in 17th position, even led 10-8 in the fourth set. But Maja Storck and her teammates failed to deliver the blow. And they ended up giving in to the tie-break, still erasing two match points after coming back from 6-11 to 13-13.
This defeat could spell the end of the hopes of the Swiss women, who must beat two of their opponents to reach the round of 16. They still have to face Italy (3rd in the European ranking), Bulgaria (8th), Croatia (13th) and Romania (19th). Their next match is scheduled for Friday night against Italy.
