Matthias Bader is normally an integral part of the Darmstadt starting XI. But now the lilies have to do without the right-back for a while. Three candidates offer themselves as replacements.

This news hits the promoted team hard: As SV Darmstadt 98 announced on Wednesday, Matthias Bader injured his thigh in the training camp. The Hessians wrote that he would not be available “in the near future”, without going into more detail.

Right-back Bader prefers to play to his strengths on the right flank in front of a three-man defense. In the promotion season he had completed 26 second division games with a respectable kicker grade point average of 3.04. Bader had missed a handful of competitive games at the beginning of the year due to an operation on his testicles, but he was set again in the final sprint.

For a little over two years, the native of Pforzheim has been an integral part of the Darmstadt starting eleven. At the beginning of 2020 he switched from 1. FC Köln to Lilien in order to get more time in the game. This plan worked out perfectly.

In the most recent test, Darmstadt tried a lot on the position

For Bader, three alternatives are in the limelight at the start of the season: Frank Ronstadt and Emir Karic could hold the same position as in the previous season. You had already represented your teammate after his operation. Especially the Austrian Karic received quite a lot of playing time in the summer preparation – also on the right defensive wing. Both players can also defend on the other defensive side – and both have to prove that they already have Bundesliga format.

In addition, there is summer newcomer Fabian Nürnberger, a trained left-back who gave up right-back in the first half of the most recent friendly against SV Sandhausen (0-0). After the change of sides, Karic was there, in the final quarter of an hour young striker Fabio Torsiello was allowed to try, while Ronstadt, who came on at the same time, played on the left.

For SV Darmstadt 98, the competitive season starts on August 14 (6 p.m., LIVE! on kicker) with the DFB Cup game at FC 08 Homburg.
