South Korean An Se Young and Thai Kunlavut Vitidsarn Make History at the World Badminton Championships

Double first at the World Badminton Championships in Copenhagen (Denmark). In the women’s draw, the South Korean An Se Young (21) won the first world title in the history of her country’s history on Sunday, dominating the Spanish Carolina Marin, Olympic champion in 2016, in two innings (21-12, 21-10). The experienced Spaniard (30), who was coming back from injury (cruciate ligament rupture), never really competed with the world No. 1, never managing to lead in the score and conceding a scathing 11-0 to finish the match.

On the men’s side, the first world title won by Kunlavut Vitidsarn. Beaten in the final in 2022 by the Thai (22 years old) dominated the Japanese Kodai Naraoka in three sets (19-21, 21-18, 21-7). For his first Worlds, Naraoka pocketed the first set, before cracking at the end of the second to allow Vitidsarn to equalise. The Thai, world No. 3, then unfolded in the last round, starting with a 10-1 to spin towards a first world title.

Earlier in the day, the South Koreans Kim Dong Moon and Ra Kyung Min dominated the Chinese pair Zhang Jun/Gao Ling (21-17, 10-21; 21-18) to claim the world title in mixed doubles. The Chinese Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan won the crown in women’s doubles, in the final (21-16, 21-12) against the Indonesians Apriyani Rahayu / Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti.
