Slovenia, Puerto Rico, and Greece Secure Spots in Round of 16 at Basketball World Cup

Slovenia, Puerto Rico and Greece won on Wednesday to complete the draw for the round of 16 of the basketball World Cup.

Slovenia beat Cape Verde 92-77 thanks to 19 points from star Luka Doncic. Puerto Rico crushed China 107-89 with 22 points from former NBA star Tremont Waters and Greece beat New Zealand 83-74 behind 27 points from Ioannis Papapetrou.

Hours before, Serbia, Georgia and Brazil won and advanced. Serbia edged Sudan’s Syr 115-83 thanks to 25 points from 20-year-old Nikola Jovic. Georgia beat Venezuela 70-59 with 25 points from Tornike Shengelia and Brazil left the Ivory Coast behind by a score of 89-77 with 24 goals and 12 assists from Yago Santos.

The United States and Spain reached the last game already classified to the second round. The Americans beat Jordan 110-62, while Spain beat Iran 85-65.

The teams that had qualified before Wednesday are: Dominican Republic, Australia, Italy, Spain, United States, Canada, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania and Montenegro.

GROUP C

UNITED STATES 110, JORDAN 62

Another game, another feast for the United States. But now the competition will get tougher.

Anthony Edwards scored 22 points and the Americans completed an easy run in the group stage by beating Jordan 110-62 on Wednesday to improve to 3-0 atop Group C.

“Staying aggressive, staying confident, that’s something I do,” Edwards admitted. “It paid off today.”

Bobby Portis had 13 points for the United States, which led by 19 points after the first period and led 62-33 at halftime. Jaren Jackson contributed 12 and Jalen Brunson 10.

“It’s always fun when everyone plays and contributes,” coach Steve Kerr said.

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson—the only player from Jordan with NBA experience—led his team with 20 points and seven rebounds. Jordan finished with a 0-3 record and from Thursday will play the qualifying round for teams that did not advance.

GROUP F

SLOVENIA 92, CAPE VERDE 77

In Okinawa, Doncic led Slovenia (3-0), as he has done all tournament, with 19 points, seven rebounds and nine assists as the team advanced to the second round. Behind him was his teammate Klemen Prepelic with 18 goals, four boards and seven assists.

Betinho Gomes was the best player for Cape Verde (1-2), who played less than expected, with 17 units and Kenneti Mendes had 10.

GROUP B

PUERTO RICO 107, CHINA 89

In Manila, Waters had 22 points and six assists as Puerto Rico, which had six players scoring in double figures, advance.

Ismael Romero had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Puerto Rico (2-1) and joins Serbia as the teams that advanced in Group B.

Zhao Rui had 16 goals, but China went winless. Minnesota Timberwolves sixth man Kyle Anderson, who became a naturalized Chinese days before the tournament began, had nine points in 31 minutes.

GROUP C

GREECE 83, NEW ZEALAND 74

In Manila, Papapetrou had 27 points and teammate Giannoulis Larentzakis scored 20 as Greece (2-1) advanced as second in the group won by the United States.

Greece extended their lead from the first period and beat New Zealand 33-20 thanks to consistent late baskets from Papapetrou and Larentzakis.

Shealli led New Zealand (1-2) with 27 points and Reuben Te Rangi had 19.

GROUP G

SPAIN 85, IRAN 65

In Jakarta, Juancho Hernandezgomez had 21 points and his brother Willy 16 to lead the defending champions to victory. Spain (3-0) arrived at the match already classified to the round of 16. Santiago Aldama added 11.

Brazil also advanced in the group.

Mohammad Amini led Iran (0-3) with 19 points.

GROUP B

SERBIA 115, SOUTH SUDAN 83

In Manila, Jovic made 9 of 9 shots from the field as Serbia (3-0) beat South Sudan (1-2) to reach the round of 16. Bogdan Bogdanovic added 23 points and nine assists.

Jovic. Bogdanovic combined for 18 points in the first period and Serbia went up 30-20 to gradually extend the lead.

Peter Jok had 21 points for South Sudan, but Chicago Bulls guard Carlik Jones had just three points in 22 minutes.

GROUP F

GEORGIA 70, VENEZULA 59

In Okinawa, Shengelia had 25 points and Goga Bitadze 11 points and 11 rebounds as Georgia advanced.

Georgia, which is playing its first World Cup, led 42-23 at halftime and Venezuela (0-3) only had four goals in the second period.

Nestor Colmenares had 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead Venezuela’s scorers, José Materán contributed 12. Both teams battled at the three-point line. Georgia hit 5 of 23 and Venezuela 6 of 25.

GROUP G

BRAZIL 89, IVORY COAST 77

In Jakarta, Yagos Santos had 24 points and added 12 assists as Brazil (2-1) advanced to the second round and bounced back from failing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Tim Soares added 15 points for the winners.

Brazil made 14 of 31 triples.

Cedric Bah led Ivory Coast (1-2) with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
