Jannik Sinner easily won his opening game at the US Open. Now the South Tyrolean has to deal with the Piedmontese Lorenzo Sonego.

Yannick Hanfmann was not a yardstick for Jannik Sinner. The South Tyrolean served the Germans in 3 sets and “left” Hanfmann only 5 games. At the press conference after the match, Sinner spoke about the game and also about the upcoming “derby” against Lorenzo Sonego. The Italian, who is ranked No. 39 in the world, is Sinner’s upcoming opponent.

“It was a very good game for me,” said Sinner after the victory over Hanfmann and explained: “After the defeat in Cincinnati, I treated myself to 2 days off. After that I had a tough but very good training week. I felt really strong today, both physically and as a game.”

Sinner also had a small technical detail ready: “I changed the sequence of movements when I served. It’s more natural now and I try to vary it too. The whole thing still needs some time. After Cincinnati, I focused a lot on that aspect.”

Duel with Azzurro Sonego

The next Sinner opponent is Sonego, who has lost both games (this year in Halle and Montpellier) against the South Tyrolean. Nevertheless, Sinner has a high opinion of the 28-year-old from Turin. “I’m looking forward to the game against him. He is an excellent tennis player and is constantly evolving. It will be a difficult match, but such hurdles have to be overcome in a tournament like the US Open. The fact that we both come from Italy doesn’t really matter. But of course the attention is a bit bigger because of that.”
