SIG Strasbourg Wins Alsatico Classic with Strong Defensive Performance

Fifth preseason game for SIG Strasbourg which went to Gries for the classic Alsatico. In a festive atmosphere for basketball, our SIGmen were able to show their seriousness despite a somewhat short rotation to win with the score of 80 to 65.

The snipers were out at the start of the encounter. In this little game SIG Strasbourg took a small advantage (5-10, 3′), but on the ASA side Carl Ponsar was the local spearhead to lead the ship. With 5pts in 40sec, he allowed ASA to take the lead after 4′: 11-10. No matter, Sofiane Briki was also warming up. The young rear remembered the good memories of North Alsace by investigating 8pts and thus gaining confidence. At 11-16 at 4′ from the end of the period, the ASA coach took a while feeling his team dominated. Honestly the expected effect of warning his team was not followed in the acts because the SIGmen were in match order. Quinton Hooker and his team passed a pretty 0-10 in 3′ (11-20, 7’30), which turned into a 3-15 with the most beautiful effect: 14-25, 8’30. The collective was serious and diligent (71% success rate) to successfully complete the 1st quarter: 19-28 (evaluation: 18-36).

The locals tried to raise the aggressiveness slider, but without real success. They managed to somewhat calm Strasbourg’s inclinations, but in no way to stop them. So in the 13th minute the score was still clearly in our favour: 19-32. Let’s be honest, everything was of course not perfect, but the sure and certain thing, our team put their heart into the work like a very fair and combative Harold Tchoua. After a very attacking first quarter, this second period was more discreet in scoring, but by no means worse. The rotations followed one another and Coach C’s team managed their lead. At +14 3′ from the break, everything went without a real hitch: 25-39, 17′. This had the gift of heating up the local coach who was taking a tough time out. He was heard by Zimmy Nwogbo who deployed, but also a little by two forgotten faults against Dan Akin who would have deserved free throws. It was enough for them to gain confidence and complete the quarter with a 9-0. Mi-temps : 34-39 (éval : 35-48).

The last 3 minutes before the break were clearly not welcome. But let’s also and above all remember the positive, such as the beautiful domination in the paint (13-21 on the rebound), players who fight and show themselves united in defense for 17 ‘or even the good half-time of Sofiane Briki ( 8pts-6rbs-2pds).

The SIGmen came back into play with the knife between their teeth, like a gala Phil Booth (ster) who was leaping and sharp to allow his team to pass a delectable 1-13: 37-53, 25 ‘. A time-out for the ASA stopped our momentum and the Grissois finally scored a little. They even made the gap back below the 10pts mark (44-53, 27′), but it must be said that they also benefited from a shower of free throws while the SIGmen were left in the water and dry bread from this point of view (9 against 0 in the period). But the team was carried by a very complete Hugo Invernizzi (10pts-8rbs-4pds at 30’), but also an impressive Quinton Hooker with a +/- of +24 (!) at the end of the period to lead his team with mastery who won the quarter and make the hole a little more at the End of the 3rd quarter: 49-59 (evaluation: 50-76).

The clock was advancing and we clearly felt one team was more on its toes than the other. Coach C’s players put their hands firmly on the ball and the game. We felt that the engine of the Blancs et Or was overheating and Romu Morency took advantage of it with his teammates to make a break that we already imagined to be decisive: 54-72, 34 ‘. Our bench was wide open with the entries of Bastien Rieber and Mathéo Coffi in support of a Harold Tchoua who we even hesitated to name MVP of the match because of his accuracy in the game (10pts-4rbs-1int-1pd). The end of the match was only literature as the story was folded and ended with a beautiful and indisputable victory for SIG Strasbourg which showed a very beautiful defensive face. SCORE FINAL 65-80 (éval : 79-100).

A victory, built on a great collective defense which saw the whole team get in tune and stay united despite the very short rotation with the absences of Léo Cavalière and Nakye Sanders. A good solidarity visible on the rebound (28-37) or a ratio passes / Lost balls of quality 23/14. We will remember the efforts and investments once again impeccable and a very good illustration of the state of mind of this team: warriors! An Alsatico in your pocket: we take it!
