Secours populaire Organizes ‘Happiness Day’ to Provide Summer Break for Underprivileged Children

The excitement is at its peak for Ludivine, 8, who is trampling on the platform of the Tarascon-sur-Ariège station, full of promise.

Indeed, in a few minutes, the little girl received in Ariège for a few days by her host family, will embark alongside some forty young Ariège residents, in a TER in the direction of Ax-les-Thermes, to participate in the 2023 edition of the famous “happiness day”: “I come from the North, let go of the little vacationer. And I’m very happy because it’s the first time I’m going to go to the mountains, ride the chairlift. one hike and we’ll go up in the eggs.”

“One in three Ariégeois does not go on vacation”

The “happiness day” is organized each year by the Secours populaire. “It’s the holidays, says Gérard Sénevat, departmental secretary of the Secours populaire of Ariège. Since 1945, the Secours populaire has been dealing with this question of holidays which is essential, just like culture, sport and food issue. It’s in the law, so in principle, the state should take over this problem […] You should know that a third of Ariège children, as on a national level, never go on vacation. This is obviously unacceptable for the Secours populaire, which has decided to take up this problem.

Thus, children from all over the department took advantage of a nice summer break at Ax 3 Domaines at the start of August: “I really thank the town hall of Ax-les-Thermes and the management of the resort for their reception, the regional council for the participation in transport and Rédha for the midday meal”, confides Françoise Delcol, person in charge of the local unit of Tarascon.

Soon the day of the forgotten of the holidays

Archery, inflatable games, water slides, giant table football, circus initiation and even a dance show punctuated the day for the children, who should enjoy a second outing on August 24th. “We take the children and their families to Gruissan on the occasion of the day of the forgotten holidays, concludes Gérard Sénevat. And this year, the requests are enormous. We should leave with four buses. The number of participants is colossal.”
