Schools in Guerrero go to virtual classes due to violence – El Sol de México

ACAPULCO. The educational authorities of Guerrero proposed applying the virtual model in municipalities where there are acts of violence, in order not to put students and teachers at risk in the next return to school.

Marcial Rodríguez Saldaña, head of the Guerrero Education Secretariat (SEG), said: “I have personally spoken with the commissioners and we agreed that the first thing is to guarantee the education of the children, but also their safety and that of the teachers, so, in agreement with parents and teachers, it will be evaluated and not put them at risk. In places where there are risks, classes will be taught virtually ”.

The person in charge of education in Guerrero pointed out at the end of the inauguration of the school cycle at the Technological Institute of Acapulco (ITA) that the first thing is to take care of the integrity of the girls and boys “that is why we will be attentive to the development of the beginning of the school year , because there are some parts of the Tierra Caliente, the Sierra and the Mountain that have problems”.

In El Durazno, municipality of Coyuca de Catalán, face-to-face classes have been suspended since December 10, when armed men murdered seven people, despite the fact that the presence of military, National Guard and state police officers was reinforced .

The same thing happened in San Miguel Totolapan, Tierra Caliente municipality, where school activities were suspended after the murder of 20 people, including Mayor Conrado Mendoza Almeda, on October 6.

In Petatlán, five people were murdered and 20 police officers were detained, forcing the SEG to suspend school activities from January 28 of this year, not only in the municipal seat, but in several communities that border Tecpan de Galeana. .

Public passenger transport vans suspended service in January due to road blockades in the Tierra Caliente region, which meant that teachers could not go to schools.

At present, violence plagues the Tierra Caliente region, as in Tecpan and Petatlán, areas that have become a field of war between organized crime groups, acknowledged last October Evelio Méndez, Secretary of Public Security Of the entity.

Some of these areas, such as Tecpan and Petatlán, also lack internet and telephone service, so it has not been possible to implement the virtual model 100 percent either.

The general secretary of the Association of Parents and Guardians of the State, Fernando Díaz Ángeles, reported last May that, according to data obtained in a field trip carried out by the organization through the entity’s schools, it was estimated that in Guerrero more than 200 thousand students of the basic system abandoned their studies due to insecurity.

Díaz Ángeles explained that with figures from the SEG itself, the school year began with one million 287 thousand students, but that it was going to end with just one million 87 thousand students, which gave an idea of the seriousness that existed due to the growing problem of insecurity that had not been reduced in the state.

The representative of the parents assured that this reduction in enrollment in preschool, primary and secondary schools was documented in tours that he carried out, where he detected schools where some classrooms had only 10 or 15 students, when they have a capacity for 35 students, and He commented that he tried to inquire with the administrators and teachers, even with the parents about absenteeism, but said that they fell into contradiction because there were arguments that it was the economic crisis, due to Covid-19, the lack of jobs and, the latter, because there were no security guarantees.

Díaz Ángeles called on the SEG to carry out its own investigation and to make its results public so that public opinion knows the reality that is suffered in the educational system, since, he accused, the educational authorities have wanted to hide the reality that is happening.

On another issue, the head of the SEG rejected that there are outbreaks of disagreement between groups of parents over the content of free textbooks, nor that protections have been promoted to prevent their distribution, as occurs in other country states.

The state official assured that in the event that parents disagree with this material, “whose content was modified by the current government so that education has a social, humanistic and scientific dimension, because it had been lost because during the neoliberal period they did not want the story to be known, he is willing to talk to all of them”.

Likewise, Rodríguez Saldaña confirmed that a total of 4.8 million free textbooks have already been distributed in the eight regions of the state, which will be delivered to students at the start of the 2023-2024 school year.

The head of the SEG indicated that the school year will begin with a school enrollment in the basic system of one million 100 thousand students, that is, in preschool, primary and secondary, who will receive their support material next Monday.
