League operations have started again for Schalke 04. However, the squad is not final yet. An ex-Bundesliga professional moves into the transfer focus.

Gelsenkirchen – The new season has started for the Royal Blues. The S04 lost 5:3 to HSV and thus did not pass the first proof of performance of the season. Only a few days before the first competitive game, FC Schalke 04 was able to finalize the transfer of Timo Baumgartl. Despite the ex-Unioner’s commitment, sports director Andre Hechelmann still has open construction sites in the squad.

Schalke 04 is looking for Ouwejan backup: Ex-Bundesliga player is without a contract

The phone of the former chief scout of the “Knappen” is probably still running hot. In addition to a player for the offensive wing, FC Schalke 04 is still looking for a left-back. Dutchman Thomas Ouwejan is currently the only trained left-back in the squad.

As a substitute, coach Thomas Reis has the all-purpose weapon Henning Matriciani up his sleeve. However, as of now, this is also planned as a backup for internal and legal defense. In the latter position, a departure from S04 jewel Mehmet Aydin is also in the offing, which will further aggravate the personnel situation. According to information from Kicker Schalke is now interested in Niko Gießelmann.

Another ex-Unioner is on Schalke’s transfer shopping list

Born in Hanover, he has played for Union Berlin for the last three years. He played 88 games for the “Iron” in which he provided ten assists and scored three times himself.

With 158 appearances in the second division – at that time with Fortuna Düsseldorf and Greuther Fürth – the 31-year-old also knows the league in which FC Schalke 04 is playing for promotion. His achievements have not only made Gießelmann interesting in Germany. Watford FC and Ipswich Town are also being traded as future clubs.

Schalke 04 with personnel worries in defense: Gießelmann could help directly

It is an open secret that the Revierklub is still looking for a left-back on the transfer market. Most recently, Brighton’s Michal Karbownik was in conversation at S04. So far, however, the transfer fee has failed here.

Brighton will probably demand up to 3 million euros. Gießelmann is therefore a hot alternative. His contract with the capital club was not extended. So the left-back is available without a fee. With his experience, Schalke would have a qualified replacement for Thomas Ouwejan.

However, there is one criticism of the transfer: the age of the player. Gießelmann turns 32 in September. Sports director Peter Knäbel only announced at the general meeting on June 17 that he wanted to increase the squad value of the licensed team. This works best with young players. It remains to be seen whether the transfer will take place in the end. Henri Szallies
