Santiago del Estero Gears Up to Host International Basketball with Arrival of NBA Stars

The action is getting closer and in Santiago del Estero everything is ready to receive the best international basketball. Only the protagonists were missing but the establishments are almost all on Santiago soil. The different delegations are in the province. The teams that will be part of the Continental Olympic Prequalifier, which will take place from August 14 to 20, in the Ciudad and Vicente Rosales stadiums, Quimsa and Olímpico respectively, are already preparing their participation in the event in Santiago.

During the day yesterday, the delegation of the Bahamas National Team landed in Santiago del Estero, which came with several of its NBA stars. The delegation was received by the Undersecretary of Tourism of the province, Nelson Bravo.

Several fans and basketball lovers came to the airport to take a picture and have some memories with the players, since some members of the squad are stars in the NBA, the most important league in the world.

Bahamas is one of the candidates in this Prequalifier, since it has Deandre Ayton and Eric Gordon, players from Phoenix Suns; Buddy Hield, from Indiana Pacers, and Kai Jones, from Charlotte Hornets, raising the bar in group A, in which the hosts also compete, in addition to Cuba and Panama.

Deandre Ayton is undoubtedly one of the great attractions of the contest. He was number 1 in the 2018 draft and a key player in the Suns who were runners-up in 2021 after losing 4-2 to the Milwaukee Bucks.

The 2.11-meter-tall 25-year-old center is one of the most prominent tall men in the NBA, with a career average of 16.7 points and 10.4 rebounds in the regular season and 15.9 and 10.5 in ‘playoffs’.

Born in the capital of the Bahamas, Nassau, he had not competed with his native country’s team since Centrobasket in 2016, when he was not yet an NBA player. Forward Buddy Hield, 30, is an excellent shooter, with averages of 43.4% in field goals and 40.2% in three-pointers, and with his team he played in the 2014 Centrobasket.

For his part, Jones, a 22-year-old center who has been in the NBA for two seasons and who plays for the Hornets, joined the Bahamas junior team for the 2019 Centrobasket U-17.

The only one of the four not born in the Bahamas is Eric Gordon, but his mother’s Bahamian ancestry allowed him to be included on the list.
