Sami Khedira will probably not become sports director at the DFB

According to information from Sport Bild, top candidate Sami Khedira will not become sports director of the German Football Association. As the magazine reports, talks about signing the 2014 world champion failed. Khedira wanted to bring “at least one employee” with him and presented salary expectations that would have further burdened the financially ailing DFB. The association did not want to comment on the report late Tuesday evening when asked by SID.

Khedira (36) was considered the hottest candidate for the vacant position of DFB sports director, after the 2024 European Championship finals in Germany he could have inherited national team director Rudi Völler. Khedira had recently confirmed discussions with the association’s leadership, but assumed that other applicants would also be spoken to. According to the report, he already wanted to have the Völler successor confirmed.

Sport Bild writes that DFB President Bernd Neuendorf informed his confidants in a video link that Khedira would not get the job. Neuendorf and Völler had the ultimately unsuccessful talks.

Sport Bild names Jochen Schneider, head of sports at the New York Red Bulls and former sports director of Schalke 04, as well as the DFB-U20 coach Hannes Wolf as other contenders.
