Russian and Belarusian badminton players will be allowed to participate in international competitions again from February next year. This has been announced by the badminton federation BWF.
The players from both countries were banned due to the war between Russia and Ukraine, but will be allowed to participate in badminton tournaments under a neutral flag from February 2024. The condition is that the athletes do not express support for the war in Ukraine.
With this decision, the badminton federation follows the advice of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in Olympic qualifying competitions as neutral athletes. The IOC has yet to decide whether the athletes from those countries will be welcome at the Olympic Games in Paris next year.
Division
There is division among the sports federations about the participation of the Russian and Belarusian athletes. In tennis, cycling and fencing, the Russians do participate under a neutral flag, but large federations such as the swimming and athletics association still exclude the athletes.
