Running Back Ronald Jones Speaks Out on Suspension, Denies Steroid Use

The news inside the Cowboys’ training camp in Oxnard continues. As was well known a few days ago, running back Ronald Jones has been suspended from the first two games of the regular season. The reasons would be for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policies. Now, this would be the first offense of this type that the running back has made. Therefore, he has left some very interesting statements seeking to clarify the entire situation.

“I just want to clear my name,” Ronald told the media on Tuesday. ”Everyone wants to say that I am using steroids and clearly I am not. I’m one of the skinniest guys both on the team and in the league.”

In the middle of his comments, he stated that what he is accused of is a stimulant for the heart. Which had been prescribed by a qualified physician. Therefore, it has been a great surprise for the offensive to receive the suspension.

“It’s something that’s been prescribed to me over the course of my career,” Jones continued. “It’s not about any steroids or anything to improve my game. It was medicine prescribed by a doctor I didn’t know. The results are in and I am responsible for what I put into my body. I just have to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Jones’ suspension doesn’t exactly come at the best time for the player. During training camp, the coaching staff is evaluating all running backs who could function as backups for Tony Pollard. And while Ronald can train with the team without problems and even participate in preseason games, he won’t be able to do so in the first two official weeks. Consequently, he could be part of the active roster for Week 3. Already on the road against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium.

According to statements by head coach Mike McCarthy, they were already aware of the situation. Jones’ test came last year, when he was still part of the Chiefs’ roster. That was not an impediment for the offices to sign the broker in March. Since nobody imagined that a suspension was going to happen. However, McCarthy made it clear that this whole issue is going to be overcome. “Obviously we knew about the situation,” the head coach commented at a press conference on Tuesday. “We support him and we are going to get through this.”

“You have to block what they say,” Ronald continued. “People are going to say what they want, but I’ve never looked to cheat in football. I’ve played this game for many years, so being here and being said about me hurts, but I’m responsible for my medications and whatever I’m taking. It is disappointing, since it was before I signed here. We also have problems in real life. My family suffers from heart disease and things like that.”

What is certain is that both Malik Davis and Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn are going to take advantage of the opportunity that Ronald has left them. Any of those three, including Hunter Luepke himself, will have a chance to be Pollard’s backup against the Giants and Jets. And while it is true that Jones will be able to play in the preseason, he would have to wait until week 3 to make his official debut as already mentioned.

This could have consequences, since if the coaching staff decides, they could remove Ronald from the official roster if they see that any of the others can step up. In short, Jones will have to work twice as hard if he practically wants to be counted for 2023.

Of course, it will be necessary to see his performance both in practices and in preseason duels. But for now, Ronald has at least come forward and sought to clarify the situation for him. Now it only remains to be seen what he could demonstrate on the field of play.
