Rookie Luke Schoonmaker Works Towards Comeback as Cowboys Rebuild Tight-End Group

In the midst of what has been the Cowboys’ preseason in California, the tight-end group is rebuilding. With the departure of Dalton Schultz to the Texans, now everything has been left in the hands of Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot. Both elements that were rookies in 2022. Now, during the Draft process, the Cowboys would stay in the second round with tight end Luke Schoonmaker. And despite spending a good time on the wings without being able to practice, he has been able to start this week without setbacks.

Dallas already has some history of having some rookies come in with injuries from their college days. Schoonmaker is now on this list, but hopefully he can make up for lost time. Especially because of what has been mentioned with the tight end corps. He’s practically new and he’s going to need all the help he can get.

Diagnosed with a partial plantar fascia tear, the rookie has been working this summer on his comeback. For this type of injury, there is no set recovery time as such. And it’s not just talk of catching up, but the transition from college tight end to pro is one of the toughest.

Already in the NFL tight ends are asked two important tasks. Which have to do with knowing how to block and apart from this, handling themselves as receivers. In fact, one of the big criticisms leveled at Schultz while he was with the franchise is that he didn’t excel as a blocker. Therefore, a bad block can end an offensive series. As a bad catch can end in an interception for the opposing team. So as you can see, the transition for college students usually takes some time. Also depending on the athletic and mental abilities of the tight end to seek to stand out in the locker room.

In the particular case of Luke, he looks very excited to have returned to activities. “It felt good to go out on the field,” Schoonmaker said earlier in the week. ”Especially after doing the rehab. It’s the next step to go back and do it all. It felt great to play football, get out there and run fast. I think I’ve done a great job with the recovery and trying to speed up the process.”

One of the things that is being praised about the boy is his speed. In fact, he’s been working alongside Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. And according to the cowboy defense, Luke knows how to give trouble in both the passing game and the run game. The best of all this is that he is back to work with just a week. Which suggests that the boy could contribute much more in the future and be on a par with Ferguson and Hendershot.

Now what remains to be known is if the rookie will be present in the clash against the Jaguars this Saturday at AT&T Stadium. Otherwise, it would already be August 19. That the Cowboys will face off against the Seahawks at Lumen Field. What is true is that the young man is measuring up. So we will have to see his progress the following week and be on the lookout.
