RETRO: How Matteo Trentin won the European Championship in Glasgow: “Like a cyclocross with 1 million turns” | World Cycling Championships

The new world champion will be crowned in Glasgow on Sunday. As with every World Cup, it rains estimates and predictions about the course and the favourites, but perhaps the 2018 European Championship is a good indicator of what will or can happen in Scotland on Sunday. Matteo Trentin then won the European title on a similar course.

Matteo Trentin is not a winner. The Italian, 34 years old in the meantime, has already won stages in the 3 Grand Tours, but in the Flemish work he was never able to translate his ambitions into high-profile results.

And yet you always run into Trentin at a championship. Especially if there is a British link. Even more so if the weather doesn’t invite you to hurt your legs for a day.

At the rain-soaked 2019 World Cup in Yorkshire, Trentin missed the chance of his life for the world title and came 2nd to Mads Pedersen.

A year earlier, Trentin had hit the mark. At the European Championships in Glasgow, he raced to the European star jersey.

“It’s like a cyclocross,” said Mathieu van der Poel

The European Championship on the road was only revived in 2016 after a long silence and was not immediately a priority for many top riders.

Glasgow was the setting for the third edition in 2018 on August 12. The Belgian team colored the final under the impulse of Xandro Meurisse in particular.

Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel, among others, hooked up their wagon. At that time they did not yet have the reputation on the road that they have today, let alone the track record.

After a fall in the final, the five of them rode away and Trentin, an ex-cross racer himself, floored the 2 cyclo-cross riders. Van der Poel took silver, Van Aert bronze.

1 million turns, wet, up and down all day,… The 2 cyclocross riders were also the men to keep an eye on. I beat them both.

“We knew it would be tough, the rain didn’t help, of course. Van der Poel said to me before the start: “It’s exactly a cyclocross here,” Trentin said afterwards about the flooded European Championship.

“1 million turns, wet, up and down all day,… The 2 cyclo-cross riders were also the men to keep an eye on. I beat them both, so that’s good.”

They will all start again on Sunday. However, relations have completely changed in recent years.
