Remembering the Tragic Death of Talavera Civil Guard Agent José Ángel de Jesus Encinas

23 years ago the life of the Talavera Jose Angel de Jesus Encinas was cut short. On August 20, 2000, the terrorist group AND murdered the 22-year-old Civil Guard agent and his service partner, Irene Fernandez, 32 years old and from Gijón.

Despite time, Talavera does not forget the fateful event. 23 years later, the pain has still not left the Ciudad de la Cerámica, which every August 20 remembers that tragedy.

Tomorrow, Monday August 21, at 8:30 p.m. a mass will be celebrated in the Convent of the Bernardas Mothers to remember José Ángel and his partner Irene.

THEY WERE KILLED BY A STICKEN BOMB

Both civil guards were stationed at the post of Sallent de Gállego (Huesca) and died when they began their working day, at 6:00 a.m., by means of a sticky bomb – placed by the ETA member José Ignacio Guridi in the official car where they were going to do the daily round.

The device, provided with a timer, an anti-movement device and three kilos of dynamite; he caused agent Fernández Perera to be thrown 10 meters from the explosion site and died on the spot; while the civil guard from Talavera died when he was transferred by ambulance to the San Jorge Provincial Hospital in Huesca.

The interior minister of the time attended the funeral chapel, Jaime Mayor Ear, who declared that ETA should be “very proud” to assassinate “two young civil guards of 22 and 32 years”. The next day, the bodies were transferred to the hometowns of the two murdered civil guards.

The terrorists José Ignacio Guridi Lasa, Aitor Aguirrebarrena Beldarrain and Asier Arzalluz Goñi They were convicted as material authors of the crime and Javier García Gaztelu, alias Txapote, as inducer.

TALAVERA

More than five thousand people attended the farewell to José Ángel, son of a Civil Guard, who had been in the town of Sallent de Gállego for months. Before arriving in the town in the Aragon Pyrenees, he was stationed in Hinojosa de San Vicente (Toledo), where he was made a foster son a few weeks after his murder. In 2005, the ‘City of Ceramics’ inaugurated the José Ángel de Jesus Encinas Sports Complex, in his honor.
