Remembering the Legacy of Italian Basketball Player and Coach Tonino Zorzi

Italian basketball is mourning the passing of Tonino Zorzi, an unforgettable basketball player and coach. Born in Gorizia in 1935, during his very long career he achieved five promotions in A1 as a coach (three times with Venice, one each with Pavia and Reggio Calabria) and won a Cup Winners’ Cup with Partenope Napoli. He led Mens Sana to A1 in 7980 and to A2 two seasons later. At the end of his career he intelligently reinvented himself in the role of senior assistant contributing to the successes in the Italian Cup of Avellino (2008) and the one in the EuroChallenge at Virtus Bologna (2009) then helping his beloved Reyer Venezia to save himself in A2 the following year. In 2008, the Italian Basketball Federation named him ‘meritorious coach of excellence’, since 2011 ‘Paron’, as he was nicknamed, was a member of the Italia Basket Hall of Fame.
