Rapid Vienna Shines in Gala Performance Against Debrecen: Advances to Conference League Play-Offs

Rapid Vienna remains unpredictable. After a strong start to the season and a disappointing week, in Debrecen a gala performance. The 0-0 in Vienna became the second leg of the third qualifying round Conference League a 5-0 win in Hungary.

Was the flu virus the main reason for the interim drop? As a reward for the runaway victory, the play-off is already waiting next Thursday Fiorentina and a probably sold-out Weststadion.

The summer flu virus, which has been rampant for ten days, also caught a Rapidler on the trip to Hungary: Patrick Greil had to like the one who stayed in Vienna Nicolas Kuehn ill fit. Moritz Oswald therefore played right and quite well.

Debrecen again relied on cultivated ball possession football and old stars Balasz Dzuksak, 36, as a playmaker. However, the Greens started even more poisonous than in the first leg. Again and again the ball was won deep in the opponent’s half. After chances of Guido Burgstaller (3.) and Matthew Seidl (11.) At the end of a strong Rapid quarter of an hour it was 0:1. Seidl stole the ball, pulled away and scored with his left for the first time in his second European Cup game (15th).

Until the first Debrecen finish, only the 1,000 Rapid fans who had traveled with them could be heard in the chic stadium in eastern Hungary (23rd). But against the decreasing pressing, the home side found their way into the divided game. Four Rapidler had from the petty Referee Stavrev from North Macedonia saw yellow early on.

Burgstaller dance

Baboonish was offside when the game was supposed to equalize (32′). Burgstaller did better after the Seidl pass: The captain dared to dance on the corner line, passed the ball sharply to the middle and Romanchuk put the ball into his own goal – 0:2 (43rd).

The now available spaces used Marco Grüll perfect in the 52nd minute: the wing went past goalie Megyeri and pushed in to make it 0:3.

Because Babunski could have provided hope for Hungary’s third party, Barisic held back with the change and the cheering (61st). The coach was left out only at 0: 4: Oswald had hit the bar from 30 meters, Burgstaller dusted off (72nd).

After that Max Hofmann his comeback after a ten-month injury break. The outstanding Seidl put the 0:5 on: Joker too Ante Bajic scored (90th).

On Sunday in Linz it’s against newcomers Blue White – and to once again show the positive side of a still unpredictable Rapid team.
