Milos Raonic beat USA’s Frances Tiafoe at his home tournament in Toronto

It is only Milos Raonic’s third tournament since his comeback at the grass tournament in ‘s-Hertogenbosch after a nearly two-year break due to injury. And for the third time the Canadian has solved his opening task. The ex-world number three surprisingly prevailed at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Toronto against the nine-ranked American Frances Tiafoe 6: 7 (12), 7: 6 (4) and 6: 3.

The two opponents struggled for 2:45 hours on the center court of the Aviva Center before the local hero was able to leave the court as the winner after a highly emotional evening for him. With an impressive 37 aces, the 32-year-old also showed what he was known and feared for in his best days – and after the exciting encounter in the on-court interview, he was justifiably happy about his great success.

Also Paul, Monfils and Hurkacz continue

“Two years I’ve been away, five years I haven’t played in Toronto, four years since I played in front of my parents who played most of my matches as a junior and most of my matches as a pro. All those things have come together for a great after for me, and for that I’m incredibly grateful,” said Raonic. The next task for the native Montenegrin is the Japanese Taro Daniel, who after a successful qualification defeated the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in two sets.

Also successful on day one of the Canadian Open 2023 were Tiafoe’s compatriot Tommy Paul (seeded number twelve) with 6:3, 3:6, 6:4 against Argentinian Diego Schwartzman, Hubert Hurkacz (Poland/15) with 6:3, 7: 6 (2) against the Kazakh piñata Alexander Bublik and Gael Monfils (France) with 7: 6 (3), 6: 7 (4) and 6: 1 against the US American newcomer Christopher Eubanks.

On Tuesday, Alexander Zverev will open against Tallon Griekspoor and local hero Felix Auger-Aliassime against Max Purcell, among others. The game will start at 5:00 p.m. (CEST).

Here is the individual tableau from Toronto.
