The round of 16 was marked by penalty-drama – right in the middle were two players from the Bundesliga: Georgia Stanway from FC Bayern and Rebecka Blomqvist from VfL Wolfsburg.
Stanway was the first kicker for England against Nigeria, firing the ball wide. Sweden’s Blomqvist also failed to convert in the almost legendary penalty shoot-out against the USA. Nevertheless, both teams advanced and are now in the quarter-finals.
New Munich resident Eriksson: “Feels great”
Blomqvist’s Swedish team-mate Magdalena Eriksson, who will play for Bayern Munich next season, was delighted with the win against the defending champion: “It feels great, I haven’t really gotten it yet.”
The Scandinavians are still in the tournament, but the road to the final is rocky: Japan are waiting in the quarter-finals, followed by a duel against Spain in the semi-finals.
But the selection from the Iberian Peninsula must first win their quarter-finals. The Netherlands want to prevent that with a Bundesliga trio. “We want to stay here for a long time,” emphasized Wolfsburg’s Dominique Janssen.
Colombia’s keeper plays for Werder
The seventh in the group only switched to Werder Bremen during the World Cup: Colombia’s goalkeeper Catalina Perez. The South Americans are the big surprise at this World Cup, beating Germany in the preliminary round and reaching the last eight at a World Cup for the first time.
Carried by the numerous and euphoric fans, Colombia also wants to survive against the big favorites England in the quarter-finals. Last but not least, it will depend on keeper Perez. “We are here to write history – for us, for our country, for our families. And that gives us so much strength,” said the newcomer from Bremen. Opponents in the quarter-finals are England with Stanway: A Bundesliga player will definitely be in the semi-finals.
