There are absurd numbers that are currently being passed around in the golf world. Professional Phil Mickelson, one of the biggest in the scene, is said to have spent around one billion US dollars on sports betting over three decades. That’s what professional gambler Billy Walters writes in a book that will be published shortly. Walters and Mickelson had a five-year betting partnership between 2009 and 2014.

Walters reports that the golfer placed more than 7,000 bets on football, basketball and baseball between 2010 and 2014. In 2011 alone there were 3,154 bets, writes Walters. And then there are the totals. Mickelson is said to have spent a billion dollars on his addiction and lost around 100 million in the process.

Mickelson has denied reports that the golfer was also considering betting on the 2011 Ryder Cup, in which he played himself. “I’ve never bet on the Ryder Cup. I have nothing against a small bet on the pitch, but I would never jeopardize the integrity of the sport,” the American wrote on Twitter.

Mickelson emphasizes that he was always very open when it came to his gambling addiction. “I’ve been looking for help and I’m in therapy,” writes the 53-year-old. In 2022, the golfer said in an interview that gambling addiction “no longer poses a threat to me or my financial security”. That same year, Mickelson joined the Saudi LIV Tour, which offered him around $200 million to leave the PGA Tour.

Gambling addiction is also becoming an ever-growing problem in Switzerland. A study earlier this year showed that the proportion of problem gamblers has more than doubled since 2019, rising from 2.3 to 5.2 percent. (aboo)
