Park In-bi to Represent Korea in IOC Athlete Commission Election for 2024 Paris Olympics

‘Empress of golf’ Park In-bi (35) will represent Korea in the election of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athlete Commissioner to be held at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

According to the Korea Sports Council on the 18th, Park In-bi was decided as a domestic candidate to run for the IOC Athletes Commission election vote after the decision of the Sports Council Athletes Committee and the approval of Lee Ki-heung, the Korea Sports Council.

Inbi Park, who challenged the IOC Athletes Commission, was selected as the Korean candidate after competing with Jin Jong-oh (shooting), Kim Yeon-kyung (volleyball), Lee Dae-hoon (taekwondo), and Kim So-young (badminton).

Previously, Park In-bi was evaluated on her Olympic performance, athlete career, and international activity skills, including foreign language skills, through a closed interview with the Korea Olympic Committee on the 10th.

The players who competed with Park In-bi were Kim Yeon-kyung (volleyball), Jin Jong-oh (shooting), and Lee Dae-hoon (taekwondo). Kim So-young (badminton). Among them, Park In-bi was selected.

Previously, Park In-bi was recommended as a single candidate through the Sports Council elders’ meeting on the 14th, and was finally selected after a decision by the Athletes Committee on the 16th and 17th and approval by President Lee Ki-heung on the same day.

Now, the Korea Sports Council will soon inform the IOC of Inbi Park as a candidate for the Korean Athletes Commission. In the 2024 IOC Athletes Commission election, four new members will be elected.

Inbi Park won 21 victories on the LPGA Tour and achieved the “Career Grand Slam” by winning four major tournaments. She was also inducted into the Hall of Fame.

In particular, Inbi Park won a gold medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, where women’s golf was revived as an Olympic event after 116 years.

The Athletes Commissioner acts as an intermediary between the IOC and the athletes. They have powers equal to those of IOC members, so they can be a great force in sports diplomacy.

There are two former IOC Athletes Commissioners from Korea. 2004 Athens Olympics taekwondo gold medalist Moon Dae-sung was elected for the first time during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In addition, Seung-min Yoo, the gold medalist in the men’s singles table tennis at the Athens Olympics and the president of the Korea Table Tennis Association, was selected during the 2016 Rio Olympics.
