OM bend Brest and take second place

The game: 2-0

The Marseillais will be able to sit, all smiles, on their sofa to follow the end of the meeting between PSG and Lens, two of their competitors for the title. A 2-0 victory against Brest, a first clean sheet of the season, Ismaïla Sarr’s first goal in Marseille colours, the evening was perfect for OM, at least in terms of statistics.

Because the raw result does not reflect the difficulties encountered for an hour by Marcelino’s team against a playful, enterprising formation whose offensives would undoubtedly have deserved better. But thanks to its opener in the 4th minute, on a header from the always precious Mbemba, Marseille was able to race ahead and reach half-time with a score of 1-0.

The Bretons however had several chances, like this header from Le Douaron at close range but too oriented towards Pau Lopez (15th), the failure – there too – of the header from Mounié at close range (24th), or of this shot from Mahdi Camara diverted by the Spanish goalkeeper (28th). The Bretons lacked realism, that’s for sure, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang too, when the Gabonese striker for example missed his recovery in an ideal position (53rd).

Fortunately for OM, Ismaïla Sarr therefore struck by being opportunistic (2-0, 65th), and the Olympians then rolled on, repeatedly failing to widen the gap. What does it matter to the Marseillais. With this victory, they are now provisional second in the L1, ahead of Monaco on goal difference, and, for them, that is the main thing. For the Bretons, authors of an unprecedented start in their history in L1 with two victories to start, the beautiful series has come to an end.

The fact: Mbemba still there

He is not guaranteed to appear in the starting lineup, preceded at the start of the season by Balerdi and Gigot, he is not even guaranteed to still be from Marseille by the end of the transfer window. But in the meantime, Chancel Mbemba is there and there, and he proved it this Saturday evening. Established against Brest, the defender made a good copy, without major fault. Above all, he recalled how much he could influence a meeting thanks to his mastery of the air. It was he, with a perfectly placed header from a Veretout free kick, who put OM in the right direction. To see if, in the coming days, the two parties will decide to continue their journey together.
