No Belgians Make it to the US Open Men’s Singles Main Draw, Greet Minnen Advances for the Women

There will be no Belgians in the US Open men’s singles main draw. Joris De Loore was close to qualifying for the final draw of the 4th Grand Slam tournament, but the Brugeois, 173rd in the world, ended up losing 3-6, 7-6 (7/3) and 7-6 (14/12) after a duel of 3 hours and 7 minutes against the American Nicolas Moreno De Alboran, 130th in the world and seeded N.25, Saturday in the 3rd qualifying round.

De Loore was on the verge of forcing the doors of the final table. He indeed led 6/3 in the tie-break of the last set, before seeing his opponent come back. De Loore, who was aiming for a very first participation in a Grand Slam tournament at 30, ended up cracking at 14/12.

Joris De Loore was the last Belgian in the running in qualifying. Of the five Belgians entered in the qualifications for men’s singles, David Goffin (ATP 98) and Zizou Bergs (ATP 151) both fell in the 1st round. Gauthier Onclin was eliminated in the 2nd, while, like Joris De Loore, Kimmer Coppejans (ATP 148) was beaten in the 3rd and final round on Saturday.

Among the ladies, Greet Minnen (WTA 98) validated her ticket for the final draw on Saturday by beating American Katrina Scott (WTA 320) 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. She thus joins Elise Mertens (WTA 32) and Maryna Zanevska (WTA 113), directly qualified for the final table of the New York major.

Yanina Wickmayer (WTA 86) retired in the third qualifying round on Friday due to a back injury. Marie Benoit (WTA 244) and Magali Kempen (WTA228) had been eliminated in the first qualifying round.
