with an impressive rally After eight runs in an extra inning, the ninth Mexican team defeated Australia 16-8 in the Women’s Baseball World Cup that takes place in Ontario, Canada.

Australia led off dominantly with two runs in the opening inning: one by Ticara Geldenhuis, who stole a base and was driven in by Morgan Doty, who also scored on a single to right by Genevieve Beacom.

The Mexicans responded in the third inning with a five-run cluster in which Denise Pérez drove in Itza Hernández and Samaria Benítez. Later, Pérez herself stepped on the cushions, driven by a single by Marlen Lagunes, and a double by Daniela Leal catapulted Rosa María del Castillo and Diana Ibarra, to put the team up 5-2.

In the bottom of that third roll, Abbey Mclellan pulled Australia close with a double that sent Amanda Lillywhite home and third to Morgan Doty, who scored on Genevieve Beacom’s fly ball, making it even at 5-5.

The game from power to power was broken by Hernández from Oaxaca when she scored the only run of the fourth inning, after a fly ball by Edith de Liège, for a 6-5 advantage.

The Mexican escapade continued in the fifth, with Diana Ibarra and Marlen Lagunes, who rang the buzzer with a single to center field by Marcela Díaz, making it 8-5.

But in the sixth and seventh, Morgan Doty took the mound and dispatched the entire Mexican battery, and the Aussies tied their turn in the seventh with runs by McLellan, Ticara Geldenhuis and Kesley Brennan, to force extrainnings with the board 8-8.

In the eighth, the tricolors came out with the bat on fire to score eight runs signed by Ibarra, Lagunes, Leal, Pérez, Marcela Díaz, Jannete Ambriz, Samaria Benítez and Rosa María del Castillo.

With two runners on base due to the tiebreaker rule, Leal bunted the ball to pitcher Morgan Doty, who tried to retire Ibarra from third, but the throw went to left field, making it easier for her to pass, just like Lagunes. After them, the next six scored runs.

There was no response in that lower part against the Mexican pitcher Maricela Aguilera, who scored the win. Doty took the loss.

It is the first victory of the national baseball team, which in its first participation in a World Cup stumbled the day before in its debut against the hosts of Canada (9-1). Mexico will face Hong Kong today, in its third game of Group A.

In the remainder of the second matchday, the United States blanked South Korea 14-0, and Canada defeated Hong Kong 22-3.
