Niclas Füllkrug (30) left Werder Bremen and joined Borussia Dortmund. The runner-up threatens competition – or a new formation.

The top scorer in the Bundesliga, the center forward of the national team, he will remain in the German upper house. But after four years, Niclas Füllkrug has decided to turn his back on Werder Bremen, possibly swapping the relegation battle for the championship race: the 30-year-old will attack for Borussia Dortmund in the future and will wear number 14 there.

The clubs announced the quite surprising change on Thursday evening, Füllkrug signed a three-year contract with BVB until June 30, 2026. The transfer fee should be significantly less than the 20 million euros initially requested by Werder. Füllkrug’s contract with SVW, which loses its most important player, would have been valid until 2025.

“Niclas has proven his goal threat for years and won the top scorer last season,” BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl is quoted as saying and adds: “Thanks to strong performances, he is rightly an important pillar in the attack center of the national team. Niclas is a Playful attacker, very good in the air, physical presence, he excels in one-on-one duels and is uncomfortable for his opponent in tackles. With all these skills, he embodies the profile we were looking for.”

We look forward to this positive guy who will tear himself up for our club.

After talking to Füllkrug, Kehl explained that he was “burning for the job at Borussia Dortmund. We’re looking forward to this positive guy who will tear himself up for our club.” Clemens Fritz, head of professional football at Werder Bremen, justified the decision as follows: “We said from the beginning of the transfer period that we would very much like to keep Niclas, but that we have to get together if an offer comes in that suits everyone involved. That was the case now, so in the end we made the decision to sell Niclas.”

In Dortmund, “Lücke”, a late bloomer as a national player, wants to play permanently at a higher level, especially in the Champions League. The right-footed player, who wants to be at home in Germany in 2024, has not yet played internationally in the club. In 128 Bundesliga games, the right foot has scored 44 goals. In nine international matches so far, they have scored a strong seven goals.

“Borussia Dortmund is a very special club,” emphasizes Füllkrug and adds: “I was very happy about the offer, because joining this club is exactly what I wanted. At BVB I have the chance to to develop as a player and gain new experiences. I’m really excited about the tasks ahead and want to be as successful as possible with this team. I can hardly wait to experience the stadium with its extraordinary fans as a BVB professional.”

First just backup behind Haller?

It will be exciting to see whether Füllkrug can also assert himself as a regular player at Borussia, initially he is planned for the role of back-up behind Sebastien Haller. Behind them, 18-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko also wants playing time. Whether coach Edin Terzic deviates from his formation with one striker remains to be seen.

In any case, Füllkrug is in the juice, has completed the preparation in Bremen normally, so he is already an option in Dortmund’s home game on Friday evening against promoted Heidenheim (8.30 p.m., LIVE! at kicker).
