Neerpede Talents Shine in RSC Anderlecht’s Victory Against Royal Antwerp FC

At RSC Anderlecht they breathed a sigh of relief after the 1-0 win against Royal Antwerp FC. Kasper Dolberg was the match winner with the only goal. In addition to Jan Vertonghen, it was mainly Neerpede’s talents that manifested themselves in this match. Brian Riemer saw that it was good.

Francis Amuzu didn’t have a very good afternoon, even though Ritchie De Laet had problems with his dribbles at times. Only the final phase of ‘Ciske’ remains a problem. However, there is no lack of commitment. But his performance fell completely in the shadows with that of the other Neerpede boys.

Leoni plays smart

Mario Stroeykens started the game. According to Philippe Albert, not in his best position, but Stroeykens is certainly trained as an attacking midfielder. Everyone will agree that this is where his future lies. Only in recent years has he often played as a striker. Stroeykens, still only 18 years old, played a good first half. He was stable on the ball, played soberly, but helped ensure that Anderlecht largely had control. In the second period it became more difficult when Antwerp became boss. Nevertheless, the young talent now deserves confidence as a base player for a number of games in a row. If he signs, of course, otherwise a transfer will be the only solution.

A little behind him, Theo Leoni left a good impression. The 23-year-old left leg is not a player who often appears in the penalty kick, but he is the ideal connection player between defense and attack. Amadou Diawara is a troublemaker in the build-up and not someone who can get the game started. Leoni is. He demands the ball and it immediately stood out: Jan Vertonghen and Zeno Debast did not have to point out where the midfielder should position himself in possession of the ball in this match. They often do that when Ashimeru and Diawara are on the field. Leoni is used to looking for spaces, as he was never able to play in the game as a late mature player. As a result, he always had to be smarter than the rest and you can see that in his game. Positionally he is very strong and with his flawless technique he often knows how to find the spaces.

Zeno Debast showed himself at the back. Playing football he was less to his liking, but defensively he was – apart from a mistake when he started dribbling – very strong. ‘Debast cannot defend’, well-known analysts suggested this weekend. He proved otherwise against Vincent Janssen, just like last year in the matches against Villarreal. It is no coincidence that the Spaniards also want Debast. The 19-year-old defender certainly has some work to do – he needs to be smarter in the duels and also work on his header game. But ‘not being able to defend’ is scoring with striking and superficial quotes. Debast is progressing normally. A year next to Jan Vertonghen would do him very good, although PSV is also a nice and ideal next sporting step.

Sardella charmeert

Killian Sardella, on the other hand, has proven that he is currently number one at right back. Last week some argued that Brian Riemer did not make anyone better, but next to Yari Verschaeren that is clearly Sardella. Last year he was strong as a left back and now he shows himself as a right back. Sardella has become more concentrated and reaches a constant level. He played strongly during his substitution against Union SG and was also good against Antwerp. Offensively he is not Michael Murillo (which makes Anders Dreyer less profitable), but he still puts depth in his game there too. Louis Patris came in against Antwerp, but has to become much calmer. As a defender, he is still too often on the ground and has to bite less. Sardella now proves why Vincent Kompany saw it in him years ago. Hannes Delcroix came in as the sixth Neerpede player. He played his match as always.

Brian Riemer praised the youngsters after the match. “We often talk about transfers, but we also have a lot of homegrown young people that we believe in. It is also a victory for the academy.” They also deserve their confidence against STVV. Anderlecht does benefit from some success with the players from home, because in recent months a lot of them have left for other Belgian clubs and also abroad A story like Leoni can be inspiring and also retaining Stroeykens would be a very good signal, as would breaking open the contracts of players like Butera, Delcroix and Verschaeren.
