On the occasion of August 15th, to guarantee a peaceful stay for tourists and Romans who remained in the city, the Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Rome intensified checks in the areas of the historic center, in the areas most frequented by tourists and in particular on board public and at the metro stations of the capital. In agreement with the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office, the military arrested as many as 13 people, seriously suspected, for various reasons, of the crime of theft and attempted aggravated theft in competition.
In particular, two men who, with the excuse of cleaning stains on hand luggage, dexterously managed to replace a Dutch tourist’s backpack with a similar one, and then walked away. A short distance away, observing the two were the Carabinieri of the Operations Unit of the Compagnia di Roma San Pietro who intervened and arrested two Peruvian citizens aged 47 and 63, already known to the police. The backpack was recovered and returned to the victim.
Two Romanian citizens aged 33 and 34, already known to the police, using the now classic technique which involves the use of a tourist map, pretending to ask for information, to cover the pickpocketing phases, were blocked while trying to remove the wallet and the iPad contained in the backpack of a tourist from Vietnam in the Ottaviano area. The Carabinieri of the San Pietro Operations Unit intervened and managed to arrest them in the act.
In Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, the suspicious movements of two people, noticed as they approached passersby showing them a mobile phone, and then resumed walking, made the Carabinieri of Rome Piazza Dante station suspicious, who decided to stop them. Identified in a 20-year-old and a 26-year-old both Egyptians, subjected to a check, they were found in possession of a mobile phone that was stolen shortly before from another Egyptian shortly before. For this reason the two were arrested for aggravated theft in competition.
At the “Repubblica” underground stop, the Carabinieri of Rome’s Madonna del Riposo station arrested a 46-year-old Peruvian citizen and a 30-year-old Cuban citizen in flagrante delicto, as they were noticed by the military, inside of the metropolitan convoy, while they surrounded a Spanish tourist, then managing to remove the wallet with about 200 euros inside the shoulder bag. Blocked by the military present on the subway, who were observing them, the stolen goods with the money were recovered and returned to the victim, while the two men were taken to the barracks.
Two citizens of Bosnian origin, both 30 years old and domiciled in the nomad camp of Castel Romano on via Pontina, were surprised and arrested in flagrante delicto in piazza Vidoni, by the Carabinieri of the Command of Rome Piazza Venezia, noticed while they were taking away from an Italian tourist, the wallet with around 150 euros inside. The wallet was recovered and returned to the victim. As a result of the investigations carried out in the barracks, one of the arrested was also affected by an execution order for imprisonment issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of Milan since she must serve 17 years in prison for a cumulative sentence relating to crimes against the person committed nationwide from 2004 to today. The woman was taken to the Rebibbia Female Prison to serve her sentence.
In Piazza di Ponte Sant’Angelo, three Romanian citizens aged between 33 and 45 were arrested in the act, as they were surprised by the Carabinieri of the Rome San Pietro Company’s Operational Unit, while they were flanking a 70-year-old Hungarian tourist, and taking advantage of a moment of distraction, they tried to remove her wallet from the backpack that the old woman was carrying but were blocked by the military.
All the victims filed a regular complaint and all the arrests were validated.
