Francesco Bagnaia became the big winner at the Austrian Grand Prix. After taking pole position and winning the sprint, the MotoGP title defender also secured victory in the main race in Spielberg on Sunday. The Italian sat down on his Ducati clearly ahead of the South African KTM rider Brad Binder, who was second, almost five seconds behind. Third was Italian Marco Bezzecchi (7.708/Ducati).

As in the sprint, Bagnaia dominated the race at will and was in a class of his own. The Italian took the lead from the start and, after a show of force, didn’t give it up until the end. In the end, the 2022 world champion secured his fifth victory in the tenth race of the season. Overall, it was Bagnaia’s 26th MotoGP win and 50th podium after a perfect performance. Ducati has won eight of the last ten races in Spielberg.

“The conditions were very difficult for everyone. I had a little trouble with the front. We underpinned our potential and took another step forward after the sprint,” said Bagnaia, who extended his championship lead to 62 points at the halfway point in the season. With 251 points, the defending champion and last year’s Spielberg winner is well ahead of his Ducati colleague Jorge Martin (189), who finished seventh after a long-lap penalty that he had picked up in the sprint. Bezzecchi is third (183). As fourth in the World Cup, Binder now has 160 points.

In the Moto3 class, Deniz Öncü won a real thousandth thriller. The 20-year-old KTM rider took advantage of a duel between Ayumu Sasaki and Daniel Holgada in the last corner. Öncü took both competitors by surprise and finally prevailed in the last meters. At the finish, he was five thousandths of a second ahead of his brand colleague Holgado.

The Husqvarna pilots Sasaki (+0.119) and Collin Veijer (0.136) landed in third and fourth place. Before that, the Colombian David Alonso (GasGas) retired while in the lead. Jaume Masia (ESP/Honda) retired with a technical defect. In the World Championship standings, the Spaniard Holgado is still the clear leader with 161 points ahead of Sasaki (135). With his second win of the season after the one at the Sachsenring, Öncü moved up to third place with 124 points.

In the Moto2 class, Spaniard Pedro Acosta finished second as Italian Celestino Vietti narrowly missed out on another KTM home win at the Red Bull Ring. The 19-year-old Acosta, who already has a MotoGP contract with KTM in his pocket for next season, nevertheless extended his championship lead. After crossing the finish line, the KTM super talent finished the slow-down lap after a short stop in leather trousers.
