Mexico’s Qualification Chances for Pre-Olympics and Paris 2024

Mexico’s performance in the Basketball World Cup in the Philippines not only left them out of the tournament, but also jeopardized the participation of the representative in one of the Pre-Olympics that grant tickets to Paris 2024.

What does Mexico need to qualify for Pre-Olympics?

It not only depends on one thing nor does it have only one possible scenario, but it seems complicated for the ’12 Warriors’ to continue dreaming of the Olympic party in Paris.

Venezuela is the key to almost all of Mexico’s aspirations, because the red wine team also lost its three games and FIBA grants access to the Pre-Olympic tournaments to teams that have not advanced to the second round of the World Cup, but are among the best places in the classification between 17 and 32.

That is why Venezuela will play against Finland and Japan to try to reach the 17th place.

Mexico needs to improve the performance of the South Americans and their path lies in defeating Jordan and New Zealand, in addition to having a greater number of points, if there is a tie between the two quintets.

The path that was closed to Mexico

The other option that Mexico had to ensure a place in the Pre-Olympics was to be the second representative from America to go the furthest in the World Cup, but after qualifying for the second round of the United States, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Brazil, that option is gone.

The format of the Pre-Olympics

Among the five continents, 16 places will be distributed for the four tournaments that will give access to Paris 2024. FIBA will distribute one to two places per continent among the 16 best qualified teams in the World Cup that have not obtained a ticket to the Olympic Games.

Each tournament will have six participants and there are already five classified so far: Cameroon (FIBA Africa), Bahamas (FIBA Americas), Poland and Croatia (FIBA Europe) and Bahrain (FIBA Asia).

Each contest will only give one ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The World Cup will grant seven direct places for the Olympic fair, in addition to France, the team that will host the fair and therefore has a guaranteed place.
