Jorge Sánchez is still ‘just’ ready for a transfer to FC Porto. Although the Mexican right back has traveled with Ajax to Bulgaria for the duel with Ludogorets in the play-offs of the Europa League, he will make the switch to the Portuguese top club in the short term. The 25-year-old defender will make the switch to FC Porto on a rental basis.

“The transfer of Jorge Sánchez is still subject to some formalities on the Portuguese side,” Reon Boeringa, Ajax watcher from Voetbal International, writes on Twitter. “In anticipation of this, the back has ‘just’ traveled with Ajax to Bulgaria, but normally the completion of his transfer to FC Porto will not be very long in coming.”

Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday that Ajax and FC Porto are approaching an agreement on the transfer of Sánchez. In the rental agreement with Ajax it is said that if the Mexican plays fifteen matches, there will be a mandatory option to buy. In that case, FC Porto will have to take over Sánchez for four million euros.

Sánchez was added to Ajax’s selection at the last minute last summer. With a transfer fee of approximately 5 million euros, the Mexican is one of the most expensive right backs in club history, but could not live up to it in his first season. He was unable to win the competition against Devyne Rensch and is therefore already on his way to the exit a year after his arrival.

The team from Amsterdam was already preparing for Sánchez’s departure, as Anton Gaaei was taken over from Viborg FF last week. Ajax reportedly pays about 4.5 million euros for the twenty-year-old Dane, who will compete with Rensch in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Sánchez, who won the Gold Cup with Mexico this summer, sat on the bench for ninety minutes during the league games against Heracles Almelo (4-1 win) and Excelsior (2-2).
