Medievalis: A Time Machine Journey to the Past in Pontremoli

The time machine is set in motion: as in the cult film of the eighties ‘Back to the future’ by director Robert Zemeckis, the tourist will be able to get on the legendary DeLorean car, and ‘rev the gas’ to the medieval epic. The roll of the drums and the blaring of the clarion announce ‘Medievalis’, a show with an ancient flavor that offers scenographic events, conferences, shows, processions and banquets. Flag-wavers, musicians, merchants and alchemists will enliven the city from Thursday to Sunday. In the squares and streets of the historic center, in the castle, in the Cresa camp, in the district of the Castelnuovo tower and in the Parco della Torre for four days, the historical re-enactment will be staged, now in its 17th edition, organized by the Compagnia del Piagnaro and by the Municipality, presented on Friday by Mayor Jacopo Ferri and Councilor Manuel Buttini. “Medievalis is an event supported by the Region which has included it among the top 10 most important – said Ferri -. A whirlwind of events, from the simulated fights between Guelphs and Ghibellines in the castle, to the dances of the court ladies. Fascinating the ‘Disfida de la Cortina di Cazzaguerra’ between the districts of Sommoborgo, Imoborgo and Contado with archery duels with spears and on horseback. All enhanced by refined costumes of ancient style, by the display of drapes and banners depicting the emblem of the city of Pontremoli and by the execution of medieval music and rhythms. At the Piagnaro castle it will be possible to visit with interest the exhibitions of the ancient art of falconry and the exhibition of birds of prey. Crowded audiences are announced for the conferences on local history topics that will take place in the Seminar hall. The re-enactments will close with the welcome to Emperor Frederick II, upon his arrival in the village, with the delivery to the city of the diploma of free commune, amidst performances by musicians, flag-wavers, jugglers and stilt walkers.

“It takes 9 months of work to organize Medievalis – explained Buttini -. This year there will be 107 stalls, last year the event attracted 62,000 people, according to the statistics of the Civil Protection which counts visitors”. In fact, in the historic centre, safe access has a limit of 5,000 people.
