Mayotte Delegation Ready to Shine at the 11th Indian Ocean Island Games

It is the meeting most appreciated by the sportsmen of our basin. The Indian Ocean Island Games will take place from August 24 to September 3 in Madagascar. The competitions will start with football on the 24th, the opening ceremony will take place the following day.

Besides, 19 disciplines will be there this year, but the 101st department will only compete in 15. Athletics, badminton, basketball, cycling, football, weightlifting, handball, judo, karate , kick-boxing, petanque, rugby, taekwondo, tennis, and finally table tennis.

For this new edition, the Mayotte delegation has 346 people, including 218 athletes. In 2019, there were only 116 athletes registered in 8 out of 15 disciplines. At that time, our department took 6th place with 16 medals. 3 in gold, 2 in silver and 11 in bronze.

Where our island has the best chance of winning gold this year is undoubtedly in athletics with the presence of big names such as Nasrane Bacar (French champion in the 60 meters), Ali Soultoini (gold medalist in the javelin throw at the JIOI), Kamel Zoubert (French champion in the 200 meters) or even Djassim Ahamada (gold medalist in the long jump at the JIOI).

It is moreover Djassim Ahamada who will carry the flag of our department. The sprinter from Racing Club de Mamoudzou will be present in three disciplines. The long jump, the 100 meters and the 4×100 meters relay.

The delegation will also be able to count on the talents of table tennis player Kilomo Vita, gold medalist in 2019. As for team sports, if we trust their performance, rugby, basketball, football and handball could also be on the podium. . Many experienced players, some playing semi-professional, will be there.

It is handball that will make the most players travel. They will be 36, girls and boys combined. All are thirsty for revenge, discipline was absent from the last games in Mauritius.

Other sports will have everything to prove. This is the case of kick-boxing, karate, pétanque, taekwondo, 3X3 basketball, badminton and weightlifting. They are taking part in the JIOI for the first time.

The main meetings will be held in the Barea stadium in Mahamasina in Antananarivo, where more than 40,000 spectators can gather.

The Mayotte delegation will stay at the Tana hotel, the Colbert hotel and the Louvre. Other accommodations are under consideration.
