Mauritius Maintains Badminton Supremacy at Indian Ocean Island Games with Men’s Team Victory

Captain Alexandre Bongout and his teammates were intractable in the final of the men’s team tournament on Tuesday at the Zone Expo Forello court in Tana. They won by three sets to zero against the Maldives, thus maintaining the supremacy of Mauritius in this event. The number “10” is of great significance for Mauritian badminton.

Of the ten editions of the Indian Ocean Island Games where this racket sport has been present, the Mauritius men’s team has never been dethroned. It should be noted that badminton was not on the program of the Games in 2007 in Madagascar. The 2023 edition was no exception to the tradition of success.

Under the guidance of coach Mohammad Moynul Islam Munna, the players accomplished their mission by winning gold for Mauritius. A second precious metal for local badminton after the one won in the women’s team tournament on Sunday.
In the final against the Maldives team, Julien Paul set the tone by easily winning his duel against Hussein Zaki, in straight sets (21-10, 21-9). Alexandre Bongout and Khemtish Nundah followed by winning 2-0 against Ahmed Nibal (21-13, 21-18) and Mohamed Rasheed (21-13, 21-13) respectively. After this victory, euphoria reigned in the Mauritian camp. Players, coaches and managers celebrated this consecration on the court.

Captain Bongout expresses his satisfaction: “We are all really happy to bring home this gold medal and keep our title. My teammates performed well in their duels. From now on, we have our eyes fixed on the individual events which begin this Wednesday. He hopes to change the color of his medal, recalling that in 2019 he won silver in the men’s singles draw.
