Matteo Berrettini has been struggling with physical and mental problems in recent months

In the summer of 2021, Matteo Berrettini, revered by many experts as an outspoken lawn specialist, was in the final of the Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon, but had to admit defeat to the then Church Road series winner Novak Djokovic in four sets. At the beginning of 2022, a semi-final participation at the Australian Open was still possible and in June of the same year he won the impressive double title at the two grass events in Stuttgart and in London’s Queen’s Club.

Then a Covid 19 infection struck the then 26-year-old and the perfect preparation for Wimbledon 2022 fell into vain. Despite the mental setback, the attractive giant managed to take part in the quarter-finals at the US Open before a persistent abdominal muscle injury became noticeable, from which the Roman would not recover for a long time.

It is now August 2023 and the physical and psychological setbacks are now also clearly noticeable in the Roman’s ATP ranking. So far, Berrettini has been consistently in the top 10, but he is currently in 38th place, which is not worthy of him, and another drop in the world rankings hovers like a sword of Damocles over the former world ranking sixth, as mentioned above , defending a bunch of points at the Major in New York.

“The Darkness Seems to Never End”

In an interview with the Italian sports newspaper “Corriere dello Sport”, Berrettini went into detail about the difficult months that lie behind him and reported clearly experienced psychological problems: “Deep down, even when I feel drained, tennis is one of the Things that make me feel life. Not being able to exercise at important appointments made me feel the darkness.”

“And the darkness doesn’t seem to end, it seems to swallow you up, because instead of staying calm and breathing, you dig your own abyss,” Berrettini continued in conversation. The darkly painted colors are now brighter again when the seven-time tournament champion later says: “Today I feel good inside and I have a smile on my face when I go out on the pitch.”

Berrettini sincerely wishes that the interaction of body and mind may run smoothly again in the coming months and years.
