Manchester City vs Sevilla: goals, pearls and the performance of the Argentine players | Julián Álvarez champion of the European Super Cup

Julián Álvarez’s Manchester City defeated a Sevilla full of Argentines 5-4 on penalties, after drawing 1-1 in the regulation 90 minutes, and was crowned champion of the European Super Cup for the first time in its history.

At the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in Greece, the English team lifted their second international title in just three months, after winning the Champions League against Inter from Italy on June 10.

The goals and the definition by penalties

Moroccan Youssef En-Nesyri opened the scoring with a header for Sevilla 25 minutes into the first half, after Acuña’s cross from the left, while Cole Palmer for Manchester City leveled the game at 18 minutes.

For the definition by penalties, Josep Guardiola’s men did not miss any shot -Julián Álvarez converted his-, while the Serbian Nemanja Gudelj wasted his opportunity in the last shot of the series.

Although Julián Álvarez was shaping up to be a starter in the team led by the Spanish Josep Guardiola, he finally started on the substitute bench.

Before the game ended, at 39 minutes in the second half, “Pep” decided to bring in the world champion striker. And he was key in the penalty shootout, as he converted the second shot of the shootout.

In Seville, three other champions were present with the Argentine team in Qatar 2022: Marcos Acuña, Gonzalo Montiel and Alejandro Gómez. Acuña played the entire game, Montiel entered the second half at 37 (and scored his penalty) and “Papu” did not add minutes. Federico Gattoni was another of the Argentines who watched the match from the bench.
