Maguire Remains Most Expensive Defender Despite Gvardiol Transfer to City

Josko Gvardiol’s transfer fee was still below Harry Maguire’s price when he was brought in by Manchester United.

Manchester United’s doorstop Harry Maguire still has the right to hold the status of the most expensive defender of all time, even though Josko Gvardiol was rumored to be ousted.

Gvardiol was officially announced as Manchester City’s new recruit, last Saturday (5/8). The Croatian national team defender was brought in by City from RB Leipzig and contracted for five years at the Etihad Stadium.

The Citizens found a deal for Gvardiol at £77 million, which means the 21-year-old’s transfer fee is still below the price tag Maguire had when he was brought in by Manchester United from Leicester City in 2019.

Four years ago United were willing to spend £ 80 million to redeem Maguire, as well as making him the most expensive defender in football history, and that record still stands today with Gvardiol “only” in second place.

Meanwhile, in third place is Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch defender arrived at Anfield from Southampton in January 2018 for £75m.
