HSV beach volleyball duo Ludwig/Lippmann impressed with two victories in the qualification at the Elite 16 tournament at Rothenbaum.

Hamburg. When the match ball was announced over the stadium microphone, Louisa Lippmann hardly believe it. “I didn’t expect it to happen so quickly either,” admitted the 28-year-old after meeting her playing partner Laura Ludwig (37) had qualified for the main draw at the Elite 16 tournament at Rothenbaum.

In a new edition of the bronze game at the European Championships in Vienna the week before last, which the Hamburg beach volleyball players won 2:1 (21:14, 18:21, 15:11), they won on Wednesday evening on center court against the Swiss duo Anouk Vergé-Dépré/Joana Mäder (both 31) with 2:0 (21:14, 21:12) and are thus in the main draw of a tournament in the highest world series category for the first time this season.

Lippmann strong in block and attack

“We found our rhythm well today and minimized our weak phases,” summarized Lippmann, who with her aggressive blocking and strong attacks had the largest share in the wins, summarizing the recipe for success. “Now we’re looking forward to at least three great games in front of our fans,” said Ludwig.

The HSV duo, newly formed last summer after Lippmann’s move from the hall to the sand, had already achieved an important interim goal on Wednesday morning. After the 2:0 (21:16, 21:18) success in the first qualifying round over Lea Kunst (21)/Leonie Körtzinger (26) from Eimsbütteler TV, it was clear that they would qualify for the World Cup in Mexico (6. until October 15th) in your pocket.

World Cup ticket booked

The places – a maximum of four per nation and gender – are allocated according to a complicated points system. Even beach volleyball experts regularly get lost in the network of world rankings, entry ranking (basis for participation in the world tour events) and Olympic qualification ranking.

Participation in the World Cup is also important, because successes at the world tournament bring in more points for the fight for a maximum of two national Olympic places. And since the 2024 Summer Games in Paris are the declared goal for Ludwig/Lippmann, the relief given the booked trip to Mexico was great.

Main field start on Thursday

“Most of all, we’re happy that we worked it out for ourselves,” said Louisa Lippmann while high-fiving her manager Andreas Scheuerpflug. From now on, the focus is on qualifying for the Olympics, as thanks to the main draw in Hamburg they can now enter the Elite 16 qualification and the main draws of the Challenger tournaments without wildcards.

In the main draw, the two will play in Group B this Thursday (9 a.m.) against Chen Xue/Xinyi Xia from China and at 5 p.m. against the Brazilians Agatha/Rebecca. At the end on Friday (1 p.m.) it is against the Canadians Melissa Humana-Paredes/Brandie Wilkerson. The top two teams in the four groups of four advance to the Quarterfinals.
